My missus signed up for a trial to test this vehicle and we’ve been accepted.

It means that we get a new electric ( think petrol hybrid ) GTE to use for 8 weeks and they install the socket at the front of house so we can charge the car on the drive. Free charge card for when we are away from home and we even get paid for the privilege.

Cushty.

It will be interesting to see how this goes and what it will be like to run an electric car around town.

Please keep updating this. I looked briefly at one of these 6-8 months ago but the online chat was not great. The figures were basically fantasy and the costs didn't warrant the car. Hopefully things have improved, the range in electric mode greater, as it looks a really good option if they have.

Will do.

My expectation is that all of the local journeys that we do (which is 90% in the missus car) will be electric powered. I guess the range won’t be a problem as all sub 5 mile distances but interested to know myself whether multiple trips can be done on one charge or not.

We bought a 2nd hand Nissan Leaf a couple of months ago and likewise got a free charging unit. The car is fabulous and the only downside is the "range anxiety", but as HID only does fairly short journeys it us all positive at the moment. Still waiting to see what effect it has on the electric bill but has to be much cheaper than petrol.

I don't expect to see claims of 400 miles driving on electric;)

I must confess to also considering one of these when I was choosing my diesel Barge replacement, but I didn't think the total value for money aspect anywhere near acceptable.
Not only that but after there recent balls up for the diesel market I didn't consider what they were claiming to be straight.

I have one great car and would recommend not a good time with winter setting in though as heater burns up battery though

Maybe the trial deliberately targets this time of year? I never thought of that.

Incidentally it’s nothing much to do with VW, it’s a TRL study.

No need to worry about distance on battery power as engine will automatily come on when battery runs out it takes a couple hours to charge with the charger

As noted above they are pricy, but good on enconmy - but not enough to warrant the purchase costs - mines a company car and very good on personal tax

Can be quick if you put your foot down as instant power from battery

Enjoy it - you will be able warm car up with phone app controling heater in the cold mornings

VW certainly looking to the future with this type of offering. Apparently they will be looking to go phase out standard petrol & diesel engines by 2023.

First off I do have the correct forum. :)

Just a quick update, we've had the car for about 2 weeks now and its a Golf GTE hybrid. The charge point is a Rolec 16A 3.6kw unit and was supplied with a 5 metre lead. It came with a second lead that has a normal 3 pin plug but we've seen no need to use that , I think the car supplier expected the home charge unit to have a 3 pin socket but it doesnt , it has the same kind that public charge stations have.

We generally charge at night taking advantage of the low tariff electricity and it seems to fully charge in about 2 hours. Its a hybrid so the car battery is quite small and the published range is 30 miles. However, in real terms the car starts in the morning with more like 25 miles each morning. The cable is mechanically locked into both ends presumably to stop someone unplugging it or running off with the cables (they're quite expensive). Charging only starts when you activate the time using the web application.

E power is probably only good for the couple of school runs that we do in the morning, by 10am the car will be on petrol and it switches over seamlessly which is pretty cool.

Till now I've run the car in pure electric mode or pure petrol engine mode (non charging) so that I could start to compare MPG figures when I start to charge the car on the move - presumably the MPG takes a big hit.

I cant fault the car, its a bit strange at first driving off when its near silent and all you can really hear is noise from the brakes, but it moves really well. The car flies on E-Power from a standing start faster than with the petrol I would say. GTE mode might go a bit quicker or it could just be that it appears to add engine noise making you think its going faster  DSG gearbox is really slick and the adaptive cruise control where the car automatically slows down when it sees a car ahead of you is a cool and practical feature.

I have the car for another 6 weeks so if there's any questions or want me to check anything out let me know.

The big one for me is an honest mpg result. I'm comfortable with how it drives and charges, it is real world mpg figures which stopped me looking at them last summer. They may well have improved the software and batteries since then.

One of my ex-work colleagues in the Netherlands has had one for nearly two years, and he raves about it. I've driven it, and been passenger, a few times. Cracking car.
