I have been considering getting a lob wedge and there have been plenty of do's and don'ts and why I should shouldn't. So who is in favour of a lob wedge and who isn't?
I personally think a 60 degree is fairly difficult to hit, so a LOT of practice would be required. I think the course you play is a factor too, I wouldn't bother with one if I played generous greens or a course that is fairly flat. I'd far rather take an extra wood in my bag. Personal preference really.
I've about worn out the Titleist 60' lob wedge I have, & its gleaming replacement has already had one or two outings.
I only use it where nesessary though. 58 degree wedges seem to be designed for those who haven't made up their minds whether they want a Lob or a sand wedge imo.
I carry 56, 60 & 64deg wedges and can honestly say that I use them collectively about 15 times per round and couldnt do without any of them.
They all have various uses. The 56deg(SW) I use between 75-100 yards, 60deg 25-75yrds & 64 deg 10-40yrds this one though I could not do without, for instance yesterday I was 2 feet behind a bunker and the pin was 3yrds over the bunker, so all I have to do is send high and let it drop (1ft from the pin in this case!)
So basically, I have different wedges for different scenarios.
I got a 52 and a 60 this year. 52 is great and easy to hit. 60 is occasionally great but often disasterous. I suspect that it requires more practice (or maybe it is just not so suited to my swing)
I am a high handicapper and love my lob wedge. Find my MD Norman drew great out of wet sand and off tight lies and as long as I swing confidently with it I have no problem.
I carry 4 wedges, PW, SW, LW and a 50 degree gap wedge which I also use for chipping.
Unless you are a golfer who can use this type of club effectively (and very few can or need to) why have one.
Good advice has already been given in another thread as well as this one.
I have a 52*, 56* and 60* wedges (all Snake Eyes). I use the 60 more around the greens and greenside bunkers as this club is best suited to splash shots on tight pins with greens that slope away from you. The 56 is more used for the 40yd bunker shots plus when the yardage is to much for a lob wedge but to much for a gap wedge. My 52* is my favorite club at the moment, its a beast.
I have PW, SW and a 60. The 60 has taken a long time to get confident with but after having it a couple of years, I have used it a lot this year. I use it for any shot that requires mostly "air time" ie over a trap, a mound, rough where I want the ball to fly virtually all the way to the flag and stop. I also use it out of the trap if I need to get the ball up quickly to clear the lip or it is a deep greenside trap.
