the college i am going to this september has been given a chance to volunteer at the 2010 ryder cup for the golf students as long as it is ok with the people who organise the volunteers as one of the previous students at the college now works as an administrator for the european tour and has reccomended the college to volunteer but i was wondering if we do get to help out what exactly would we be doing for them??

We get offers from Sunningdale to marshall at their big events including last years British Ladies Open and the Seniors coming up. It normally involves nothing more than crowd control (stopping them at crossing points as players tee off etc) and ensuring the crowd is quiet as they play shots.

You may get to man scoreboards, man the crossing points for spectators or if you're really lucky and suitably qualified, hold up a "Quiet Please".

Got to be worth doing just to be there and feel the atmosphere.

it all sounds really good at the moment but the one thing that concerns me is that with this being the greatest golfing event ever with the biggest names in europe and USA i will become highly distracted and possibly mess up with what i am meant to be doing.

Remember to stick your no camera signs up if Poulters playing :D :D. We get it at our club when The Open is at St Andrews or Carnoustie as well as the Dunhill Links my mate does it full set Waterproofs ,a dozen balls and a food voucher for each day and the chance for free golf watching cant be bad

I got talking to a Marshall at the Belfry last time the Brit masters was there and they got Woodworm waterproofs, hats and shirts and a £10 food voucher each day. Mind you £10 doesn't go very far when you're out on the course from 7am till 8pm!!

I talked to some of the marshals at the events that I've watched and many come from 'clubs' organised solely for this purpose. Most of the plum jobs, course marshals and the like, will go firstly to local club members, then to these experienced groups. Be prepared for some mundane jobs.

Be prepared for a long day, the course may open at 7 am but you will be required much earlier, although many do work shifts.

Probably the least you could expect would be a 'uniform' top (Ryder Cup polo?), cap and waterproof.

i've been accepted for a volunteer role for the 2010 ryder cup. the 'job description' isn't as rosey as you may think it is. It could involve car park duties - even at car parks away from Celtic Manor for the park and ride in Usk. It costs £50 to vlounteer but you get £12 back each day in vouchers to spend as you want. you also get breakfast and a hot drink included per day. You are required to be there monday - sunday for this. you are given 2 polo tops, 1 pair trousers, windshirt, waterproof 'safety (hi-vis) jacket, hat. For an extra £20 they will provide waterproof trousers. all the clothing you get to keep. you get access to the course and the opportunity to purchase a season ticket for 1 other person for the event at a slightly discounted rate.

I'm really in 2 minds wether or not to do this as spending time directing cars in a car park many miles away isn't high on my list of things to do in life :D

hope you find this interesting.

John,
