I played a society event yesterday and win with 34 points with 2 blobs. 2nd place 31 and third 28 with the weathe being awful. 2nd place was a member of the club and said I would of smashed the course if the weather was good.

After the event and notices read They've asked me to take a voluntary cut as the last two events I've come 2nd and 4th out 14.

Its a silly question I know but what do you think a sensible cut will be considering I play of 25. Some of the society members asked for me to be cut down to 19 but I think that's to low! Your help is most appreciated.

I played in a work society once that had been going for many years. some of the guys on that (the better players) were playing off society handicaps that were much much lower than their actual handicap. they got cut shots for coming 1st and second.

its a way to spread out the winners and keep everyone competitive. its not exactly fair but keeps people interested.

I play in 2 societies and they cut 2 shots for first place and 1 for second place. Based on that I'd say a fair cut would be down to 22 for your first and second places. Even if you had taken a 1 shot cut for the previous 2nd place you'd still have won the last outing so all fair.

As Gary says it basically increases the chance of different winners and keeps thing interesting. If cut's were only done based on shooting better than handicap it would result in 3 or 4 guys getting 1st and 2nd every time because it is rare a society day is won by more than 36.

If it is a perpetual society with an AGM and you are a member then you should also suggest the include some controls for HC in future. I'd love to add full handicap control to my societies for those that aren't members of a club to allow them to move up as well as down just to allow for a more even playing field.

If the other meets had a similar pattern, then 6 shots doesn't seem far off.

Agreed that perhaps others should be increased, but this could well be an example of the 'own system' that I believe Sindles/societies should have.

The swindle I played in at one club used to slash more than Congu - and raise a bit (20%) faster too. We generally played 5-6 shots below Congu, but I triggered a couple of revaluations by getting below scratch. Winning scores were normally around the 30-32 Stableford points.

Are there any other Congu handicappers to calibrate?

fairly normal procedure in my dealings with societies to ensure there is a spread of prizes and one person doesnt win every meet, the 2 shots for a win and 1 shot for second worked well and you only got any lost shotys back for the start of the next season.

In any society I've ever played in the cuts are made by the other players, that's the only way the others will be happy.

In our roll-up matches (friendlies) we get cut 2 shots for a win irrelevant of how much it is under handicap or if under handicap at all. If you do not win the following match/week then you go back up 1 shot and then the following week after that you'd be back at your official handicap, unless you keep winning that is.

It would depend on how many play in the society to be honest

In our society we have .. overall , cat 1 and cat 2

Overall winner loses 3 shots................................ (3 handicap or under its 2 shots (i think))
Cat winner 2 shots , runner up 1 shot .....................(3 handicap or under its 1 shot (i think) )

every 3 events without a prize you get 1 shot back

You cant apply club handicap rules to society golf unless all members of the society are golf club members somewhere , it just wont work ..
You also cant leave handicap matters to members themselves , when the society was set up it should have been decided what the handicapping system should be .. not open to interpetation because someone has a good a day ..

In your case i would say 4 shots is fair enough... 14 members is not many so a fair handicapping system will take working out

Our roll out approach. 14 in your society so 1.4 cut (0.1 per player) for each of your 1st and 2nd - so 2.8 cut. If prizes for 1st and 2nd. Maybe 0.05 per player for 3rd if 3rd place pays out. Your 4th doesn't merit a cut.

Aimed at preventing any individual winning everything (when handicaps are a bit uncertain)
