Today I had a custom fitting for a couple of new Vokey SM5s to replace my worn Spin Milled Vokeys.
Currently I have a 52/8 and a 56/11 which I want to replace, plus a SM4 60/7. Vokey are now promoting a lower ball flight for their wedges with a higher spin rate, thus enabling players to keep the ball flight lower so not affected by the wind, yet making the ball stop better on greens. Using Trackman my spin rate for my 52/8 was shown to be 2,000 rpm and with the new 52 degree SM5 it was over 4,000 rpm! It did seem strange however not to see the ball towering high into the green.
I finally opted for a 52/12 with F grind and a 56/10 with M grind in a Gold Nickel finish which hopefully will be in the bag by the weekend!

I have the 52/12 F grind and 58/11 K grind in the bag. I have not noticed the lower flight but I have noticed the extra spin and it is killing me. Using a pro v 1 on damp greens the ball just stops dead. I am struggling to trust the ball to stop so I'm not getting the ball to the pin. TBH if it doesn't stop then long is as bad as short so this weekend I'm firing directly at the pin. Fingers crossed. These are super wedges though no mistake.

I have the same set up as Drawboy and echo what he has said. I am having to be a lot more aggressive, particularly on the shorter chips as I started leaving everything short, just didn't get the same run out with the new wedges as I was used to.

What are considered 'good' spin numbers for wedges - 2000 seems very low (average driver spins more!) and 4000 also seems low - I know shorter swing etc but what sort of numbers are you looking for?

read a blog last week and the chap managed to get 10,000rpm from his, i think thats crazy high, but his average was about 8000.

My point was that these were the figures for my swing.I have no idea what others spin rates are, nor am I bothered (Rather like how far others hit the ball). The interesting thing to me was how much the spin increase was with the SM5s over my current clubs with exactly the same swing.

Clive - sorry, no implied criticism, having just been through the whole driver / irons fitting thing I was trying to understand what passed for the 'norm' in this area. Can see how you would be very happy camper with a 100% increase!

No problem Simon, I didn't take it as critcism, I'm too long in the tooth now to let anything like that bother me. I know what my limits are and play to them.
