After reading the online interview thread, software called Dragon voice recognition was mentioned.

Checked it out and its priced at £80 odd. Interested to see if anyone uses any other voice recognition that is a tad cheaper.

I can see how something like this would be a great benefit for me at work instead of my slow tippy tappy typing.

Over to you...

Dragon is pretty good, and its gets better the more you use it.

You need to train the software through a series of speaking excercises, but the software is pretty impressive. I used to use it to transfer dictate notes to text and it was very accurate. It can also open programs, search the web, select boxes, files and other software packages.

You will be able to find it on filesharing sites and try it out. That way you wont have the outlay and can try it out.

I mentioned in my reply to the other thread.

I have no connection with the company but have used Dragon Dictate since it came on the market for almost 20 years.

If you let it scan other documents on your computer it will recognise phrases and jargon you may use in your work etc. and, as has been said, use the 'training' facility and correct any incorrect translation.

Use a good quality microphone, I also use a digital recorder that can be plugged into the UBS port of my laptop which can the translate the dictation into text. A bit of practice with the text commands of 'paragraph', 'caps' etc will soon get you up-to-speed.

Most good voice recognition will do the same. Personally I wouldn't bother with the cheap versions you'll waste time constantly correcting errors and it will put you of the software.

Use a good system and you'll be amazed how quick you can talk and get the text 'typed'.

Being able to touch type is a wonderful thing.

When I started work 30 years ago I learnt on an automated trainer on the vax.... The single most useful few hours spent of my time ever.

Lots of free tutors online now, it's the perfect nee years resolution. 20 mins a day for a month should do.

How is the new software going comma is it picking up everything semi colon and are you getting to grips with the instructions full stop new paragraph

I'm sure you will get plenty practise in open brackets over Christmas close brackets so can start the new year on the right foot full stop

If you are having trouble with commands I'd suggest you are talking too slowly; it is best to speak in complete sentences at normal speed; pausing slightly for punctuation commands.

This is unless your post is a tongue-in-cheek comment.

Agree. I really couldn't manage all of the written work I do without the ability to type quickly and reasonably accurately.

Come on FM, get learning!

I still don't think I could type as fast as the dictation. It's just a matter of having a play around with it and getting to learn all the features. From my initial use yesterday I was very impressed. Will have another shot at it later on this evening and see how I get on.

Not sure if this works are not but it just opened up another window with this text in it. It would seem just a case then of copying and pasting into the reply. Maybe this is the secret!

Only the one mistake, are instead of or.

Edit You click transfer and it sends it over.
