Video Lesson

Well, I say I have, but there there wasn't much detail.

My swing was comapred with Stuart Appleby and then the video was never used again (had five lessons).

Going to kick start some more lessons later in the summer and one of the offers at my local range includes a couple of video lessons.

What should I expect from a video lesson?

You might have your swing filmed at the begining of the lesson and then watch it. It could be filmed again at the end of the lesson and see if there is an improvement, watching the swings side by side.
Perhaps watching your swing side by side with a model swing would also help. :)

I personnally think that they are useful but not the be all and end all.
I find it is more important to create the right feeling in a swing. When I have a lesson from my pro he will have me work on a particular aspect of my swing and for about two weeks after that I have to practise it to create the right feeling to make it work because initially it throws out my tempo balance etc etc.
When you look at all the different pros and their swings they seem to be doing the same because when you read in a mag an article about a player he explains all these aspects such as planted feet, left knee over the ball at top of backswing
so for me it is nice to see the horrors and the correction but I don't believe it is the solution.

Every lesson I have had incorprates video analysis. It's amazing to see how different your swing is to what you imagine it to be like.

Before I had any lessons my swing was incredibly flat, my body and shoulders aiming open and my hands behind the ball at set up.

When you see this it's more useful for when putting it right. Because the positions I was moved into at the end of the lesson looked/felt so wrong I probably wouldn't have believed they were correct without seeing them on camera before & after.

On the basis that I don't take lessons and don't intend to I had to vote never and never.
However, if I was to take lessons I'd probably want video incorporated into it .

When I had my video lesson, I can clearly able to see exactly what my pro wanted me to do with my backswing and it was so much easier being able to visualise it rather than being described it and having him move my hands.

Would recommend definitely!

I think whats obvious from the responses so far is that its nothing to do with the type of lesson you have but the quality of the coach.

I have had several video lessons, and find it a very useful way of not only visualising what the pro is trying to get across but also your swing (unless you have an out of body experience its not easy to see your own swing without a VC).
It also really good way of spotting tempo changes.

I would recommend it

Just get a mate or your wife to video your swing with your mobile phone and annalyse it yourself. Easy and cheap as chips!

Glad you posted this Bob as I was going to relay my experience that I had last Friday.

i went to Bromsgrove GC for a lesson last Friday and instead of being a cheapskate I booked in with the Head Pro, he charged a little more but I found it to be much better as he only does video lessons (he does also do putting and oncourse lessons too).

Anyway, I went to him saying that my game is really coming together nicely and I'm happy with my putting, short game, irons and fairway woods, but for some reason I am useless when I have the driver in my hand.

He got me to hit a few balls with my driver and then showed me on the big plasma screen where I was going wrong. With a camera down the line and face it was really easy to see my problems and with the live video I could not only see where I had to be, but also the correct feeling at those points.

I have been practicing all weekend in front of the mirror (my golf swing that is ) and cant wait to go down the range tonight. :D

You have to know what you're looking at though.

If you are with a pro they should be able to point out some problems which you may not spot.

one thing that annoys me is that my pro videos me, we watch it and he makes some suggestions, I try them and they work, but he doesn't video them working! I therefore have no visual reference points for what I am doing right, only what I am doing wrong.
I think this is flawed personally

Every lesson with my teaching pro is filemd so we have a before and after analysis. He'll send through a copy of the video usually with lines etc drawn on to highlight the bad points (before) and the good points (after) so I have a library of images. He'll normally jot down what we've worked on and the key points to focus on along with the drills and their aims. I can't complain as he explains it really simply as we go through it step by step and then follows it up after the lesson.

I find it so easy to go back say 6 months to a full swing lesson when I'm knowingly doing something like overswinging and reverse pivotting and see the position he got me into to sort the problem and read the drill we worked on. If I then get HID to film me and load it into the ProV software I have a direct split screen comparison which makes analysing the progression so simple
