Very Hooky Hybrid

I have a Taylor Made Burner (white head) hybrid 19 degree replacement 4 iron jobby. Ive been playing some tight technical courses lately and using it off the tee for accuracy more than anything and I seem to be very hooky with it. Now I do play a natural draw, and the shaft is stiff as I have a fast swing speed but I surely shoudlnt be hooking it as much as I am? I am starting the ball very right to try and hit the dancefloors....

Is the standard stiff shaft very whippy? My playing partners have commented that the shaft seemed to be flexing on the approach to the strike position and point of impact???

Although the shaft could be a contributing factor, the main cause is almost certainly an issue in your swing.

I suffer from the same shot shape with my hybrid and I know that it’s driven by an in-to-out swing plane. Aiming to the right only exacerbates the problem.

You might need a new shaft / club – but I’d take a lesson or two first to cure the source of the problem rather than just to mask the symptoms.

For what it’s worth, I think the cause of my problem is trying to help the ball into the air, if I strike down and get my weight through I find the problem is greatly reduced. I don’t know if this is good advice or not – so feel free to ignore!

How can your PPs see what is happening at impact with the naked eye when it is moving at in excess of 95mph?

Could be the shaft, could be the swing. Tell us a bit more about yourself and welcome :D

It's also worth remembering that the vast majority of hybrids have some draw bias to them.
Even ones that say "neutral" still have a slight right to left tendancy.
So if you naturally draw the ball, this extra "help" may not be doing you any favours.

What about tee height, I can get some shape differences due to the height .. So low (as in flush) I get a slice/fade and higher so ball equator is just over the club head I get draws/ hooks ... And if I get it somewhere in between I get a nice straight to small draw... Occasionally

Check the weight of the shaft as well.

Hybrids with shafts less than about 75gms will have a tendency to Draw. TM tend to put 60 gm shafts in as as a stock shaft! Mine certainly tends to draw (60 gm shaft) as did the Callaway Bafflers (65 gm shaft) I tried years ago. 90gm 904HB and 80gm Altus work fine. remember that hybrids are often swung like irons which can have shafts 120 gms!

i have the same problem with my tour 4 hybrid rbz, mines 21.5* yours is very low, i hold the club face open a bit when hitting to counter the extreme right to left, but im starting lessons in 2 weeks hopfully my coach can sort my swing out

Apologies folks its a 21 degree Hybrid (4 iron replacement). I am teeing lowish so the top third of the ball is showing when the head is rested on the floor. For those that asked (and care) lol, I am a 12 handicap (well 11.7) but on the creep up playing at Stanmore in North London.

Must admit I've a RBZ 23 degree and have the same problem, I find the regular shaft very soft. I've bought a stiff 85g shaft but not had the bottle to get it fitted yet!

One more thing that might be worth trying.

Try setting up aiming at the left hlf of the fairway! Use old balls, just in case, but you might be surprised how the brain controls the arms when 'under pressure'. Once you get the different feeling that hitting it straight rather than hooky draws gives, you can apply that while aiming down the middle! Works pretty well for slicers that aim further and further left and slice it more and more!

you are teeing 'high'ish' for a hybrid - not low'ish!

generally you should have it just clear of the grass to get consistent strikes from both tee and grass.

strangely, in an otherwise solid round today, I hooked both hybrids 6 times and pushed it 2. Didn't even pull or draw any other club. Monday I was nailing them all round - something's changed, just need to find out what. It's not the club or shaft.

I would say that's a 3-iron replacement and would say that tee'd a bit high for a hybrid (not that any of that helps your hook problem :D)

Funnily enough when I went to Pachesham for my fitting, my TM superfast hybrid (3H) went low and left. It was bought as a regular shaft but the pro could barely flex it and it was definitely stiff. No wonder I struggled to control it. He said TM in particular did have a reputation a few years back for tipping shafts different which affected their flex.

Too far back in your stance?

Slightly closed stance/alignment?

I find them best when tried to hit with a slight fade, they are a distance club (graphite shaft) but I need a bit more control. I put them forward in the stance and try and hold the face from rolling over. I find the middle and get a nice controlled powerful straight or slightly faded shot.

When people start to hook, they try and cure it but more often than not, the cure makes it worse.
If you hook, you tend to stop turning your body through the shot causing the hands to flip at the ball.
Try turning hard through the shot, that will stop the hands overtaking your body

I've got a similar problem with my hybrid off the tee and from the fairway but when I'm hitting it out the longer stuff it goes bullet straight!

I'm guessing it's a set-up related issue so will just need to note how I set up to it next time I'm in the rough rather than on the fairway.
