I had the opportunity to play Verulam in a Seniors fixture and it left a most pleasing impression.
There are some interesting contrasts. Firstly there is the tradition of a mature James Braid designed course, original clubhouse and the history of Samuel Ryder and the Ryder Cup compared with the friendly members, welcoming attitude towards casual players and a young enthusiastic professional; and secondly the picturesque views of St Albans Cathedral overlooking the course, Sopwell House and the swan-nesting wetlands that border part of the course contrasted with the entrance to the club next to an industrial estate, the busy east coast mainline along the first two holes and crossing a road four times. Indeed the par 3 17th played over the heads of motorists gives a new meaning to the 'road hole'.
Whilst not long, the doglegged holes, sloping greens and lush fairways for this time of year ensured you needed to hit straight and putt well. Anything off line into the trees and shrubs would punish your scorecard. Fortunately my partner was in good form for I suffered on occasions, and we took the match 4 and 3!
I believe there are special offers available on mondays, so well worth a visit
