For those that apply the 95% allowance for their social strokeplay games (a topic in itself probably), do you use the app or arithmetic to ascertain PH? IG (so presumably all?) uses un-rounded CH I believe so different results may occur between the 2 methods right?

Yes, ISVs are required to use the unrounded CH for PH calculation for comps. Do what you like for social play.

Genuine question but by “do what you like” do you include some using the app and some not? Coz that’s what our small group do. My attempts to suggest we all use the same method are met with bemusement as they don’t think there’s a difference. Their eyes glaze over when I try and explain why there might be.

I’m guessing those (in a particular handicap range) using the app that don’t think it makes a difference, sometimes seeing their CH equal to their PH, are not mathematically inclined.

It would make sense to use the same method as is used in comps but, as you say, many players have a more relaxed attitude when there is no official comp to be concerned with. Using just the Course Handicap from the MyEG app would seem reasonable to me.

We have a table outside of the Pro Shop/1st Tee which gives ‘machine precision’ PH for 85%, 95% and 100% for all tees. We recommend players to use it for casual games. Members do appear to use it. The logic being that it reduces any arguments.

We also provide a downloadable calculator for all tees and format combinations for our course using ‘machine precision’ PH, accessed via a QR code.

I do believe that EGs decision not to enforce ‘machine precision’ PH just adds confusion. The EG App could easily be adapted to calculate them .

Surely the table shows PH for the rounded CH, not the machine precision ones?
It does show ‘ machine precision’. I built it from EG tables for our club.

It kind of needs the player to work it backwards. The centre column is rounded PH from +5 to 54 . The 85%, 95% and 100% columns for each tee are positioned either side of the PH column and are the HI ‘in ranges’. e.g +6.0 to +5.1. ; 10.4 to 11.2 ; down to 48.2 to 54.0. ( numbers made up for this illustration).

The member decides the format allowance they are playing, run their finger down that % column for that colour tee until they find their specific HI in a range, then run their finger across to the centre PH column where they read off their rounded PH.

I appreciate that this description can sound complicated, but it isn’t, the members use the table with no problems though probably most of them are unaware that they are using machine precision calculations. ( there is a large note stating that they are Machine Precision) but hey, who reads notices 😀

I think the ‘beauty’ of the table is that, even when playing in competitions and the PSI screen gives them their PH when they register, they often go to the table to check whether the software has got it right. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think I must be misunderstanding machine precision!! Doesn’t a CH of 12.10526264 give a 95% PH of 12 whereas 12.10526263 gives 11?

How do you represent that on a table?

What am I missing? Be kind.

The table takes you directly from your Handicap Index to your Playing Handicap. The Machine Precision Course Handicap is used in the preparation of the table.
