I was up the range tonight and my ball striking was inconsistent as it generally can be,along with my current issue of pulling the ball/missing greens left.

So i started playing 3/4 punch shots and I was striking the ball as well as I ever have, with a much more penetrating flight and seemingly no loss of distance.

Do you think it's a good idea to make this my main shot on the course? I'm in two minds as I have a matchplay tie at some point this week. Cheers

What felt like 3/4 punch shots could well be a full swing, and you've been swinging long.

Try it at the range once or twice more maybe, and see, before putting it into play, maybe.

Yeah true,I'll try to get someone to take a video and see how it looks.

I sometimes struggle with weight transfer could be down to over-swinging.

punch shots generally keep a low trajectory! nothing wrong with that at all. especially if the wind gets up.

I would typically play a kind of punchy shot with my irons. I am working on hitting them higher at the minute. I need a higher softer landing shot for some approaches and par 3s.

Are you actually playing punch shots of the back foot or just shortening your backswing a little ? Reckon the shorter backswing is just giving you more control to keep the club face squarer as you go through the ball ?

I play most irons too far back for the supposed correct position. punchy shots.

been putting the ball further forward and trying for less shaft lean for a higher flight these days when I feel its safe to do so. this high ball feels like a new club in the bag! great!

It could just be a shorter backswing. It's how I would play say a knockdown shot.

I do feel as though I've got more control on the clubface most definitely it was really helping me produce I crisp strike.

I'm still learning about my swing, luckily my short game is decent as my iron play is inconsistent at the min.

There's a fella I used to play with and he used to always hit punch shots with his irons and it worked really well, had a really nice ball flight.

However he didn't use the punch with his driver, tried full swings off the tee and it was brutal!

Massive slice, couldn't control it at all.

I think that it is important to be sure playing a punch shot with your irons that it won't damage other areas of your game

I was struggling with a weak fade with my irons for a long time (only on the course, never the range). The pro who teaches me worked on a couple of things, but the main one was the feeling of hitting a punch shot. Slightly shorter backswing, and a "punchy" follow through that felt like it didn't go past my shoulders (though in reality it would).

As the problem only ever came up on the course, I couldn't tell on the range whether or not this was a good fix, but the first couple of times it came up during rounds, I tried it out, and it definitely improved my ball striking. It became my "go-to" swing, when I was under pressure or striking it badly, and I would use it until I was hitting it well again.

When I mentioned it to my usual playing partner, he said that he couldn't see any difference, but, like you Soft hands, the way the swing felt to me was very different.

As has been mentioned here, the difference between a shot that feels like a punch swing, and a punch shot, is considerable, but if it works on the course, it's a useful swing to have in the bag!

I would have thought a classic 'punch shot' has everything to do with the length of follow through and very little to do with the length of the backswing.

I doubt that's the case

Using a punch shot all the time??

I would say it's an extremely handy shot to have in the bag but to use it all the time?
I would say no.
Due to the nature of the game, to be a good player you need to be competent at ALL the shots

I had a lesson years ago and it was from Nigel Tokley at Broadstone , he is now at Remedy Oak , he told me to have the following swing thoughts in my mind ........... 1/2 swing = a 3/4 swing and 3/4 swing was a full swing , it works , a knockdown shot works too , more club instead of trying to kill the club you normally hit ..........its more controlled but you need to learn and practice playing it , no use playing it from say 120 yards but keep missing the greens .........................EYG

I'm always told my backswing is too long - a 3/4 swing in a lesson turns out to be a full swing, I just feel like I'm not swinging all the way through.

Punch shots work - a PP of mine only really uses a punch shot (although doesn't play off the back foot constantly) and plays well all the time!
