Apologies if this has been posted already as i have only quickly scrolled through the forum

Check out some of the distances of these par 4's

I know 'par' is irrelevant is terms of the lowest score still wins but these are crazy - are they doing this to make sure the US open is won wtih a score over par to make it seem hard?

14th at Chambers Bay (2015): 546 yards
11th at Chambers Bay (2015): 537 yards
13th at Chambers Bay (2015): 534 yards
18th at Chambers Bay (2015): 525 yards

I've found links often have holes longer than you might expect. Par 4 over 450 isn't uncommon. Given amature drive averages sit around 215 and pros around 290 it sort of balances it. It'll be nice to see the pros having to hit long irons or woods at a links green. After all so many amatures do that week in, week out.

That's the US Open for you. To the rest of the world par is pretty meaningless, to the USGA its a very different meaning!!!

Personally its one of my favourites of the whole year. I love to watch the pros grinding away, the more difficult the better

I think that you have to take those yardages with a pinch of salt.

My understanding is that the teeing areas at Chambers Bay are particularly long (and probably particularly wide). The USGA therefore has a great deal of flexibility in setting up the holes and will almost certainly not make them all play from the tips.

Without knowing the holes in question, CB is very much a 'running' course, so if some of these are downhill and wind behind they may not play as long as they look.

Think the 1st and 18th are going to alternate with each other for which one is being a par 4 and which is a par 5. The 14th was extended to bring a bunker back into play (amateur's were flying over it, so the pro's wouldn't have had any issues).

Nothing wrong with having to work hard to win. This year though, I seriously have no idea what kind of score will be winning it purely due to the unknown factor of Chambers Bay. Looking forward to it being on (what is being touted as) a proper links course!

As someone else said, they are just the longest they can make each hole. No doubt they will change the set up each day to alternate the lengths of the holes, hopefully bearing the forecast wind in mind.

I thought they had already said they were going to make on of these a par five on some days and par four on others

So thats how you get 44k posts - repeat comments others have made
post #5

in all seriousness though - i didnt think about them just giving the optimum distance each hole can be - i just thought that was the official length of each hole haha!
