me and Missis T had an appointment last week to update our wills. In essence we asked for it to be explained and written in plain English.

Bloody hell, we were sat reading it last night in hospital and I had my first ever migraine.

Now don't get me wrong We deffo need one updating but even the queen don't use that English.

I keep meaning to do a will and never get around to it. How much does it cost nowadays?

To be honest sawtooth, it got a bit complicated for me in the sense that instead of me leaving it to Missis T and Vica versa. It involved making sure Mr council man don't get half of the house re possibly ending up in a nursing home etc etc. Price would be about £250 for us because it was a joint will with " non English " quoting bits and bobs tucked on. And when said solicitor is working for £177 an hour am glad our said solicitor does not have dyslexia.

That aside me man I could not envisage not having a will whatever the cost.

I am a bad person, i still (we) dont have one. Main problem is the kids! What do you put in about their care if we go soon? no one wants (or can have) my 4 kids and we wouldn't want them split up!

Guys, please do a will and do it soon, you can buy a will kit from WH Smiths and do it cheap or get legal advice via a solicitor.
I have no legal training but have experienced some horror stories dealing with guys who have died in the Army and not left a will, seen it rip families apart.
Sometimes it's more important to state what you don't want to happen more than what you do.
Rooter:
Apologies if I'm speaking out of turn, you need to have that talk and protect your kids.

I have only recentley changed mine , I had a forces one that I had forgotten about , it was leaving everything to whoever I was shacked up with at the time. I feel a lot better now I have a proper one (updated one) Managed to get it done with a Groupon deal for £21. Mine is not a complex one .

very strange you should put it like that paul because in essence yup the will is making sure what don't want as against yes what you do want. Unfortunately sometimes you have to write separate letters as to why you don't want X to have Y. Some families at the smell of the family brass will do anything to get a share.

As paul says pull ones finger out and get a will done.

I would strongly recommend getting it done by a proper solicitor - not your local "Wills Are Us" or even worse a DIY will. I have heard of some horror stories

Served as a Welfare Officer a couple of times and unfortunately 2 of the deaths I dealt with were particularly bad, one had no will and the extended family appeared like a pack of vultures.
The other had left a will and some members of his family whi were not mentioned fought it and won a share in court.
Sad what money does to people.

That last bit where you mentioned about families going to court is part of why we renewed our will and I mentioned about a written sealed letter.
As with most folks on here am sure there are many horror stories when it comes to wills, but as long as I know I have done my best to protect " my last will and testament", there's not a great deal more I can do.

My sister used to be a solicitor and came across many home made wills. Disaster territory. Don't cut a corner, it needs to be written properly. The text is gibberish but it is there to protect you. This is the gibberish that you would miss off because it makes no sense to normal people. Based on her tales I have to strongly back Paul's comments, get your will done. Don't assume what you want to happen will happen if you don't have it written correctly.

100% mate and that's why we should all have one done.

As the man says. Perhaps you might like to look at this, http://www.willaid.org.uk/will-makers/find-solicitor-2016

After my dad died in July , we realised that Mum didnt have a will at all, so went to the local Solicitor my dad had used for ages for his will and house conveyancing,
we were there for an hour and she said at the end, that it was going to cost £750 plus VAT for a very simple will.

Sod that, its mostly a word processing exercise anyway, so we got Age UK to do one for about £100,

Not a fan of the DIY will, but its better than nothing,

The biggest problem I have seen is people who are beneficiaries also acting as witnesses, this invalidates the will and is a huge no no

Fortunately both my mum and dad were well organised and so sorting their affairs was relatively simple. Foolishly I hadn't seen sense to get my own affairs sorted and with health issues now looming, it's something I simply have to find the time to get done and soon

She wanted another £750 for a power of attorney , we wont be using them again, needless to say :(

Think that's what it cost for MiLaws POA with our solicitor. One they used to use was going to charge over £1000. Still can't get over the cost for a simple will.

Scott, thing to think of is what would happen if you and your wife don't do wills and the mess and stress it would cause.

Oi, don't be popping your clogs anytime soon, I owe you half a lager and lime. If you dont do a will it will cause me hours of endless hassle finding out who the half, should go to.

That aside homer, Non of us has drunk from the spring of eternal life so the end is inevitable. My parents are organised as yours were, and will meet there maker knowing most of there kids have there heads screwed on the right way. It is something I hope I can pass onto my kids. At the moment I am 2 out of 3 re the kids. When Tashyboy meets the big G and I mean God not Golf. I want to look him in the eye and say " I would not change a thing about my life and my affairs are left in order".

Chellies short but sweet comment sums it up rather well.
