unusual scoring in a competition

Re: Potential cheats #2

HDID, at Royal Musselburgh last saturday. A 4 HC guy is 2 under par standing on the 18th then NRs.

My last round I was 4 over par on the 17th tee, looking at a decent cut, and went quadruple bogey, triple bogey. Don't you suppose he just mucked up the 18th?

Worst he would get is a Nett double for h'cap so gets a 0.3 or 0.4 cut. NR'ing even if he took 20 up the last is very odd.

EDIT. having said that, if he submitted his card he gets cut anyway so in this case, it is likely he did just mess up the last.

Re: Potential cheats #2

I don't get that, There must be a logical explanation to why he NR'd. A cut at that level is so little it wouldn't affect anything.

Re: Potential cheats #2

Or is it?

What if he was playing with 2 really slow players and someone else, who happened to shoot the lights out too, and after he put 2 OOB on his drive and a 3rd one into the clag, he knew he couldnt win, and that he was going to get cut regardless and there were a couple groups up their backsides because they were so slow.

He didnt want the guy who was about to potentially win the comp to be put off, so he decided to walk in not playing his lost ball and just mark his fellow competitors card, thus not delaying the groups behind any longer too.

This is all quite plausible. Just as plausible as doing it deliberately, if not more so. Whats the point here? That we DONT KNOW THE REASON, so speculation is just plain stupid at this point. Casting aspersions as to his character without knowing the facts is worse than cheating in my eyes! Poor guy has no reply to this as he doenst even know its going on.

Re: Potential cheats #2

H'mm!

Keep telling the story about the Handicap Secretary I knew really well and his description of the 4 types of player.

1. Blissfully ignorant of the system and/or just lets any changes happen
2. Keen to get the number a low as possible. Often too keen.
3. Vanity handicaps - typically Seniors - where 0.1 increases can't catch up with decreasing ability.
4. Handicap Managers - trying to keep the number as high as possible, to win elsewhere.

Which one do you think the OP's example is?

The H/Sec was really only concerned about those in #4 as, being a bit of a corporate place, he'd be embarrassed to see a club member winning a corporate even with 48 points!

Re: Potential cheats #2

He could have played out with the wrong ball, and not botherd going back? Anything really. He still gets a cut.

I would agree with the above. While the circumstances do indeed seem odd there may well be a more mundane explanation

In general please be mindful of bandying around the term cheat and certainly dont name anyone. I have edited the post title to reflect this

Why the fuss? Why a thread? There's a hudndred different innocent reasons why this could have happened unless the OP knows otherwise.

My thought if I saw a scorecard like that would be 'ouch, bad luck on the 18th matey'. But maybe I reckon that the majority of golfists are honest.

This is a very good point.
So often people jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts.
Of course the op might know something we don't.

Re: Potential cheats #2

I have recommended people do this in the past (on this forum)

Although it was recommended to people who felt their h/cap was too high (or practiced a lot) so that they can still get a h/cap cut without winning the comp and being called a bandit.

The same as carrying on your round after NR'ing the 1st hole so you can still be eligible for a cut.
