I've had some AG vouchers burning a hole in my pocket for a month since my birthday and rather than rushing out to replace my lob wedge with a Ping Tour-W as I always planned I thought I'd bide my time and consider my options.

I decided last week that I needed to replace my hybrids. The reason being that I bought them to replace my 3W and 3i but have since decided I like my 3W making the 16 hybrid largely redundant and therefore leaving too big a gap to my 22 deg hybrid. Plus I have come to realise that while I hit them OK, I don't actually like the feel of them.

Anyway, took a trip to AG yesterday expecting to come away with a shiny new Ping and ended up with a Yonex Nanospeed 3i 19 deg hybrid.

I've never even considered a Yonex club before (to be honest I'm surprised it didn't come with shuttle cocks :)) but amongst the Ping's, Mizzy's & TM's the Yonex stood out. The flight on the launch monitor was the best and most consistent and the balance throughout the swing was just awesome. I've always been a bit sceptical about those monitors, I think because you don't actually see the flight but the guy assured me it was accurate so I went for it.

I went straight to the range after work and I'm now even more impressed. What a fabulous golf club it is and judging by the flight the launch monitor in AG is pretty accurate. I've always been undecided whether I preferred my long irons or hybrids, I've now made up my mind.

So I was wondering, what was the last golf club you bought that took you totally by surprise and absolutely blew you away?

I had some birthday money last month and having just got back into playing I decided I needed to upgrade some bits, most notably my shoes and a needed lob wedge. Both of which I got, but I went into AG on bank holiday weekend and they had some pretty stellar offers on. Ended up getting shoes, a lob wedge and a Nike SQ Dymo driver.

I tested it in the practice nets and like you, questioned the monitor system. I tested a regular Flex 10.5 degree and the guy in the shop said with my swing speed I would be better with a stiff flex (which they didn't have in stock)...Ordered a Stiff flex 9.5degree (limited stock as it's an "old" club) and had it within a few days.

He warned that a 9.5 might accentuate any wayward shots, but it was £99 quid and I had my heart set on a shiny new driver so I took the risk.

I'm glad I did. I don't notice any hooks or slices being any worse than with my old Callaway C4 which was 10.5, but it's a fantastic club and has added 30-40 yards on my drive. I'm consistently driving it 280-290 and it's pretty much the best £99 I've ever spent.

I pretty much did the same thing when I bought my yonex. Tried the all regular brands, but the yonex just felt right. It was even more expensive but i still went for it.

good club with quality components.

enjoy

Wilson Staff fybrid 21. About a year ago; was struggling with my existing club (not squaring) and tried one on a L.M. and the results were amazing. Just suits me I guess.

My recently purchased Adams rpm. Have been trying for ages to fill that gap in my bag so took a punt on an older club for forty quid and am loving it

the last one I bought, Mizuno MX700 3-wood. Not had a 3-wood since I got rid of the package set and haven't got on with fairways, however it do go well.
