A club near me had an open day on Monday. BB stableford with food before and after for free, open to members of nearby clubs. The idea was to attract extra members by showing off the facilities.

Unsurprisingly this event was fully booked with 36 pairs for a shotgun start. It was blowing an absolute gale and I was chuffed with me and my mate's 36 points bearing in mind it was 3/4 handicap. Get back to the clubhouse to find 51 points was the winning score! To make matters worse they had a hole in one and no mention of buying drinks. 51 points off of 3/4 handicap in as strong a wind as I've ever seen, what do you reckon?

Crikey, that's low! :D :D

You often see hole-in-ones in howling conditions on open days when 51pts is a walk in the park, so not much point for celebration there, frankly I'm surprised it wasn't on a par 5 :D

[nb: You was robbed, was one of them known as HTL per chance?] :p

Not sure that their business plan is too sound there. Trying to attract members from other clubs is a sure way to antagonise the other clubs as you steal their members. You're surely looking for the nomad golfer in these situations, trying to bring them in to see the benefits of golf club membership ? ;)

In my experience bad conditions don't always mean bad scores in club golf. I shot my best round this year in the worst conditions I've played in this year. No matter what the conditions, someone will always go low.

51pts is a damn fine score though.

Blowing a gale???

BobMac was only this week telling me there's no wind in England!!!!

Were the leaves rustling on the trees?

If it was Bawtry CC I played there 2 weeks ago in a charity event 4 man team stableford. " scores to count and all to count on 18. Winning score of 96, yep thats right 90 flipping 6.

HTL and I had 44 points and we thought we were gunning it a bit with that. 51 is a mockery. I agree that the business plan does sound bullish at best trying to poach other members. Surely if they are in other clubs they know about the club in question anyway and what it has to offer.

My club runs open days. Nine holes with the captain, vice or a committee member, tour of the club and a bit about the history, use of the range beforehand and I think they are trying to tie in a short group clinic with the pro too. It seems to be working pretty well too and is geared for unattached players really although is of course open to members elsewhere looking at a change

Last year when I was off 7 and my partner was off 6 we scored 49 pts. I did happen to throw 6 birdies in though and he knocked a couple in himself. We also had a one point hole too where we both bogied

played 5 miles down the road on what i think was the same day and we had 44's coming in

Yes it was at Bawtry GC. 2nd place was 43 points, they must have been pig sick. The winners were 2 blokes who looked in their early 60's and it was being bandied about they were both off 20 odd.

It wasn't just the wind that made this astonishing. The course was bone dry and the ball was bouncing all over. Even with 5 points for the hole in one I couldn't quite imagine how someone could play that well above their supposed ability level.

Yes pal saw having had it pointed out to me that it was Mon and i played that day also and it was as windy as I have know it in a long time.

51 which ever way u look at it very very good on a calm day never mind last Monday!
