I played in a 4BBB club match today. On our par 3 ninth hole one of our opponents hit a low hook off the tee which took once bounce on the grass and smacked into the side of a red BMW in the car park which runs alongside the 9th.

Fair sized dent in the passenger door of the car but the ball has bounced back into play, otherwise it would have been flying through the car park and out of bounds. Still 35 yards from the pin I'm thinking he's up against it with me having a 12 foot birdie putt. How wrong was I.

He thins his chip racing across the green it looks like it'll be about 10 yards off the green on the other side. But no, it cracks the pin and drops straight into the hole. I stood there in utter disbelief. And of course I missed the birdie putt for a half.

We went on to lose the match on the first extra hole. It could be worse though, I could have been the owner of the car he hit.

I hesitate to say "luck of the Irish" but that's some way to win a hole. Hawkeye and I were beaten once by a guy that raced a putt from one end of the green to the other at the first extra hole in the Volvo matchplay. It would have been halfway down the second if it hadn't hit the flag flush and dropped to win the match. The only time they were ahead

I hope he did the right thing and reported the damage to the car afterwards and has insurance as that may cost a few quid to fix
