Had this exact conversation over a few beers with my pal yesterday, he's the expert (done mma training for years) and he couldn't call it either.
McGregor has great skills but he hasn't really been fully tested so far in his career, Aldo is a vicious beast who can destroy with his fist, kicks and ground game so I'm going for him.
Either way it should be a great fight, the sport needs it after too many bore fests lately.
Did you hear the comments about Mcgregor from Uriah Faber? Had to chuckle at them.

Yep excited to see this one. Aldo is up there in the pound for pound rankings, unbeaten in nearly 10 years and as decent on the ground as he is standing. McGregor is a knockout artist and brilliant at hyping his fights. It's a genuine 50-50 but I'm backing McGregor. If it goes to the ground Aldo has an edge for sure. Don't think McGregor has ever fought over 3 round either which may be a factor. However if he connects it's all over. I can't wait. Hope the talk of Aldo's rib injury doesn't prevent it happening.

Aldo for me, always take the one with a proven track record rather than one based on hype. McGregor may yet prove to be the real deal but at the moment has it all to prove.

Like ftr, hope the chat re aldo's ribs is just rumour and nothing serious

Edit: wow just seen McGregor is favourite for this and you can get 5/4 Aldo, will be talking to a few who's view I respect but expect Ill be having a chunk on Aldo at the price

I'm hoping it's not another pac man v mayweather, all hype no substance.
Can't see that happening though as the ufc usually delivers.
Would like to see mcgregor win, Aldo may have a good record and be a great fighter but for one reason or another has pulled out of 4/5 title fights, and think he is holding on rather than defending.

McGregor vs Aldo will be nothing like Mayweather-Pacquiao. Neither of these guys have ever been boring, unlike Mayweather who's always boring, and they genuinely hate eachother, so we're going to get fireworks.

My brain says Aldo, my heart says McGregor. Conor is an exceptional fighter, and I love the trash talk, he's the star the UFC desperately need, but the UFC have kept him away from top competition. Poirier was very good, but not on the level of Mendes, Edgar, Lamas or Bermudez, and other than him Conor has been fighting guys that don't remotely compare to Jose. I do wonder how much the rib injury will hamper him. Anderson Silva's worst performance, the first fight against Chael came when he had a rib injury, it can make certain elements of the game very, very difficult. Conor has all the skills to take down Aldo, his striking is superb, his movement is unmatched in MMA, and his grappling is massively under-rated, but I'm just not sure whether he's good enough to take down Jose. It's going to be an amazing fight though. I can't wait. It's the only big UFC fight I'm actually excited about.

Wanting to fight in Ireland or these ones ?

"He's got a whole nation of people that have nothing else to cheer for.I think it's fun, this sport needs guys like Conor. Conor's not just a talker he's a great fighter. He's a guy that backs up what he says and he's making headlines. Especially for Ireland, I've seen some hot Irish women but all the dudes over there are pretty mangled looking. Conor, just not having freckles and bright red hair makes him like a super male model over there. The ability to not have a face full of freckles and red hair steps his game up tremendously in Ireland. They've got a hero and he's good." Urijah Faber :D

Have heard McGregor saying he wants a football stadium fight in Ireland...I suppose he needs to get by this fight first.

Going back home tomorrow so will be interested to see the level of media coverage the fight is getting there.

Pretty funny that a dude like Urijah is comparing the McGregor of 2008 to the McGregor of 2015. Completely different fighter, completely different man. Like saying Urijah has a weak chin because he got TKO'd by Tyson Griffin in 2005.

So excited for this fight, and the more I listen to Conor's interviews and his prediction for the fight, the more confident I feel that he's going to win. Come on Conor!

So much for that. Jose's run away with his tail between his legs and Chad "Midget" Mendes comes in. Stylistically, a pretty terrible match-up for Conor, and a massive test of his grappling skills and movement. I would love it if he proved all his doubters wrong and blitzed Mendes in the first, going to be a very tough fight for Conor though!

Was trying to find the fight on my Android box but came across a news report which showed a few highlights. Don't want to put any spoilers on but it looked like he struggled early on.

So... I'm assuming anyone reading this thread will by now have seen the fight or know the result. Spoiler below...

What a performance from McGregor! Deserved victory against a very game opponent in Mendes. McGregor is very watchable with an all action style. I like the fact he looks at it as a fight and not just sport as that often gives his fights a bit of edge which adds to the occasion. McGregor also proved he can prevail against a top level wrestler, endure punishment (lots from off his back) and still come out on top. He could and should be at the top for a long while as he has all the attributes. Hope him and Aldo finally get it on now.

Quick mention for the Lawler MacDonald fight which was even better viewing.

Just watched it, not quite sure what to make of that. Mendes the better fighter for 9 1/2 mins then McGregor just destroyed him in 30 seconds.

May be a good fight for him as may make him take some of the top level oppos a little more seriously going forward, still like to see him in with Aldo asap though!

As alluded to above, the Lawler McDonald fight one of the best if not the best Ive ever seen, amazing turnround from Lawler who was clearly hurt in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

That was the best main card the UFC has ever produced. Every single fight was awesome.

I know Mcgregor won, but if Chad had a full camp I honestly believe he mauls him for 5 rounds, Connor will always struggle against wrestlers.

There is probably a chance they may meet again down the line. A longer camp would definitely have helped Mendes, although he was warned he may have to step in when Aldo first suffered injury, although not sure exactly how much notice.

McGregormania will kick into overdrive now especially if he gets a fight at Croke Park.
