Two balls in a bunker.....

This happened today.....

Player plays a shot on a bunker and two balls came out!! There was a lost/abandoned ball (nothing to do with the group playing the hole) plugged underneath his which he didn't know about. He played his shot and removed both. Caused some discussion in the bar but the upshot was that it was just rub of the green and play as it lies.

Question arose as to if he had been able to see the other ball beforehand, would he have been able to remove it and recreate the lie before playing?

Have had no time to look any of this up and off back to the club for our Captains presentation so thought I'd post this. So on the first count, was he correct to play as it lies? And on the second, is there a case for relief?

Yes he would. An abandoned ball is a movable obstruction.
