Does your club have a rule where by not all members are eligible for the club championships?

Is the club champion then truly worthy of the title??

I’m excluded from my club’s event as I am a country member – no issue with being ineligible for all other board events but am a bit miffed about club champs. To identify the best golfer (of the day) at your club, surely everyone should be involved including juniors, seniors, country members etc….in fact anyone with a playing category.

Does your club do the same? Do you exclude juniors? Are you getting the true club champ??

When I was a junior org my club would not allow juniors to play in the club championship.
When they refused I asked them what would they have done if Peter Oosterhouse had been a junior at their club as he had played for England and the Walker Cup team before his 18th birthday.
The following year juniors could play and the following year a junior won.

That was about 40 years ago and even to this day I know of some clubs who do not allow juniors to play in their club championships.
Generally hiding behind the excuse that only full members can enter.

A Country Member could play in our Championship. They would have to have been an Ordinary Member before becoming a Country Member and they have to meet the residence requirements (Live 50Miles away) to qualify as a Country Member. We don't have people initially join as Country Members.

Juniors don't play in the Championship.

I can see some logic in not allowing 'Country' members to play in CCs. And also having a limit, if necessary, on other categories of member such as Juniors - provided they also have their own equivalent.

At one club I belonged to, the Club Champion was the best nett player over the 4 rounds - 1 in May, 1 in June and 2 on the same day in August! There was an, almost token, award to the 'Best Scratch' as an after-thought!

I presume you knew what the rules were before you joined? Or have they changed them to stop you entering?

Juniors yes
Country membership no - strong argument to just get rid of the latter :)

For many clubs outwith Scotland the Club Champion is simple the strongest member - if there's a 5 shot handicap difference to make up you won't get a whole lot of betting on the rest of the field!

Our current champion was a Junior when he won the first time, has won the last 2 and is currently in the top 100 amateurs (world rankings) - but isn't competing this year for a number of reasons. The next on the list isn't competing either. So it will be a new name on the board, but not as a result of what happens on the course....

Club Champion - best golfing member who turns up on the day; suppose it beats the best golfer who may not actually be a full club member but made the journey on the day...

our club championship is played 2 round stroke play the 3 rounds matchplay the comp get split handicap/ scratch/junior/Lady.

We only have one board though and thats the Scratch, so the best player at the club usually wins.

I don't see an issue with country members not being able to play, they are not allowed to sign guests on either as the membership fee for CM is a fraction of the full fee.

To be our club champion you have to finish in the top 8 gross averages over the season then these 8 players playoff matchplay style to determine the champion. I reckon thats a pretty fair way of doing it.

Anybody who plays in weekend comps and is good enough over the season can win.

Surely as a 'member' I would have thought you are entitled to enter club champs. Seems a little odd but then again its a golf club we are talking about and they are not always up with the times!

I am in the last 8 of matchplay stage at my 'away' club so no problems for me entering . It only means someone is going to knock me out at both my clubs, penalty of not being good enough I suppose.

our club championship is a 36 hole comp and best gross combined wins, this is rightly for full members only,no juniours(they have their own comp) no 5 day members (weekend quilfiers only count) and no women,i think 132 strokes won last year par 70,they have a net trophy as well for us mear mortals.

Everyone should be allowed to play in the Club Championship.

They are all members of the club are they not regardless of whether you live 80 miles away, are 15 years of age or 72 years old.

I'm not disagreeing with you.....but, is your club champion worthy of the name if [possibly] the best golfer(s) are excluded because of their membership category?

I know what your saying but to enter you have to be a full member and at my club I think the lads who win it ARE the best golfers at the club, off hand I think the last few years it has been a hard fought scrap between 3 players who are all +2 or better and ones a county player, and I don't know of any other player at the club who would better them over 36 holes.

I think it has to be open to all, unless the club has a high number of Cat 1 players - then I can see the sense in restricting it. But there's often a Handicap prize to play for too..

But generally, it has to be open to all branches of membership otherwise, as the OP suggests, you don't get a true "Champion"
I haven't played a CC since I joined APGC. Mainly because its held on a weekend and I'm a midweek member. But I could if I wanted to..........

I'm a two club man and I'm not allowed to enter the major competitions at my away club. I knew that when I joined and I accept it. If there is a space on the start sheet I can still play just not qualify to win so I can still test myself against the best in the club.

Might be a bit embarrassing though if I was to win

are you a full member at your away club, or in a restricted category of some sort?

if not, you are opening an even bigger can of worms!

Away handicap status is purely an administrative element that can be changed at will (pretty much)

As long as they have played five qualifiers in the last year anyone can enter. Juniors must be over 16.

so not anyone can enter then lol

ours i s completely open to male members of the club (seniors, juniors, 5 day members etc all included), if they didnt include juniors at ours any victory would be pretty hollow as we now have 3 very low juniors, all who will have a chance this yr
