Starting today and it's always one of my favourite stops on either Tour.

In my view its status as the 5th Major is entirely justified. In fact in my book and discounting the Ryder Cup (not a Tour event) then it's the 3rd behind The Open and The Masters in terms of watch-ability, the 17th on Sunday is special.

Let's hope one of our guys (ideally Rory for me) is top of the heap on Sunday.

If you take the women's game as a precedent, there are those that argue that the intro of a 5th major has taken the gloss off the collective.

Each of the 4 current majors is unique, e.g. masters - mystique of Augusta, US Open - toughest test in golf, Open Champs - where it all began, USPGA - well... for pro golfers.

The question for me is whether TPC offers something distinct from the others? For me it sits nicely where it is, in between a regular tour event and the majors.

It's just a regular PGA Tour event that they have hyped up ( ET players can't play in unless they have certain criteria ) and played on a course with one real memorable hole - certainly nowhere near the level of the majors. For me it's at the same level as our PGA

To clarify maybe. I wasn't suggesting it should be given Major status, but that in my mind it feels like one and I really do look forward to it coming around each season.

It's one of my favourite tournaments to watch so hence my view. Although of the four actual Majors then I can honestly take or leave the PGA. To me it has little or no mystique or any real sense of 'Major' vibes. Rating them:

1. The Open
2. The Masters
3. The US Open
4. Meh...

The TPC has a much stronger field than the Masters so you could argue it should be the 4th major never mind 5th.

The BBC did an article asking this question. I don't think it will ever be classified as a 'major'. After all, such a move would play havoc with the record books and render comparisons with past players much more difficult.

Who are you guys tipping this week? Some decent tips here with a statistical edge http://www.thestatszone.com/articles/2017-players-championship-preview

I fancy Sergio myself!

Easy to say now but I'm liking Rickie....was disappointed with his last round at the Masters but otherwise he has been decent and the stats generally support it.

Been watching the American coverage on Sky since early doors but for the last hour or so there's an earth loop humming on someone's mic that's driving me blimmin mental.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggghhhhhh!

Can an someone fix it for pity's sake:angry:

Not a major for me and nor should it be. It is a showpiece tour event a bit like the BMW on the ET and always a strong field. I enjoy it every year and a bit like Augusta you get use to the holes and the pin positions and it's a good view

Maybe the argument there is not where the players sits but more where the Masters sits

The PGA championship has its critics but it could be argued it has the strongest field in golf

Pretty sure the PGA does have the strongest field - more of the top 100 than any other event.
Regardless of how people view The Masters it is a limited invitational field. There is "qualification" but it's still by invite - even then it's only top 50 + others. And the Masters Committee play their own game on TV coverage among other things
TPC does give up a very strong field and it is curious that a Major has a weaker field than a Tour event, albeit a big one...
I doubt it will elevate to Major status but, personally, I feel it's more of a Major than The Masters..

I agree there are only three events that meet the requirements for being majors. I don't think any come close to the current big three.

Whilst I've been watching the coverage 2 things that have been made clear: 1) All of the Sky commentary team are infatuated with 'DJ'; and 2) Butch Harmon is definitely sure John Rahm is a young man who has some game/can really play!!

I hit the mute button on Roe and Butch after less than a minute!!!
