As you know i just started playing Golf and i'm probably years away from taking part in any amateur tournaments but just wanted feedback on your tournaments experience. Good fun? Competitive? Have you won any? Any good prizes? etc etc....

Remember that it's just a game of golf, and that you're playing as a hobby. I've seen too many people, and I've been guilty of it myself, getting down on themselves because they're playing poorly.

I've won a few quid for a birdie, but I've never been close to winning a medal.

No matter what you score, remember that it's only a game :)

Not sure of your definition of amateur tournamet is ,as every tournament /comp i play is amateur .. Have played in a few different comps & its always competitive but 90% of the time its fun & polite aswell .. Have won a couple of board comps in my old club , won a few opens & society days etc which is a great buzz , But to me its all about handicap i want to go as low as i can but be able to play to it .. playing alot of scratch cups this year which are mostly .1's back but hopefuly they will make me better & improve my all round game
Won the Golf Monthly Centenary qualifier in Donegal in 2011 & the final in FoA the same year that was a good feeling but after a week or two its in the past .. handicap is always current ,,

Havent played in a comp since I was about 10 years old but it was good fun. Even just for the banter with your friends afterwards about who beat who. Good way to meet new people too, rather than always playing with the same people

Plenty off open competitions about on golf empire if you have a handicap. Some really good days out and you get the chance off playing with different people. I have met loads of golfers in the years I have been playing open comps and well worth the money.

+1 to that. Winning comps is nice, and you might pick up a few quid for doing it, but it's all about the handicap for me.

I play club comps more to play with different people and keep testing myself rather than to win, open comps amateur tours and national natchplays to play other courses. Any odd prizes of pro shop vouchers are a bonus it's more just being out playing is my main priority. Enjoy! :)

My advice would be simple. Join a club if you haven't already done so, get an official handicap and then play as many club competitions as you can. As your handicap tumbles and you get more use to nerves, how these things work etc then maybe look online for some open events. Bear in mind though that many are over subscribed and many use handicap to ballot out the overflow and so the lower you are the more chance of getting in you have. However there are plenty of others, like the Surrey Tour I know some of the guys on here have played which just require an official handicap and the entry fee
