Just seen Adam Scott use a long iron on the 302 yard par 4 (12th at Sawgrass). He was only a good bounce away from being stiff. As it happens he put it in the water but that's not the point.

302 yards with a long iron defies belief...

(Just made his par)

They are crazy, but I think it's "only" 250 ish to carry that bunker so it's not quite as crazy as it sounds at first glance.

Someone took an 8 iron from just over 200 a day or so ago, but they're landing it short of the green and letting it roll up. Still probably carried 170-180 though.

I had 230 to the flag on our 14th today, hit 7 iron and was back left edge about 10 past the pin (we wont discuss ground or wind conditions!)

conditions dependent

And every club usually has a player who can bomb it as far, but just not get it as accurate

young guy at my club with 125mph club head speed, serious speed, even on tour

i play with one at ours, plays off scratch, would be seriously long by tour standards, but whilst an awesome ball striker not close to being good enough as a golfer at that level

😀 I suppose I did hit a 5 iron 220 uphill last year at Crail. I wont mention the 18 club wind...

ok now howling gale i could explain, but thats impressive with a hosel fade :p

It does resemble this from about 100 yards off the tee

Played a practice round once, hit a 3 wood off the tee through a par 4 green into a load of cabbage and wrote "t shot, 4 iron" as a reminder in the yardage book.
Wind changed for the tournament, hit a driver and a 7 iron short....

A guy in our scratch team was telling a story about a 16 year old big hitter (now on the web.com) playing in a foursomes comp years ago.

Our first is around 350 and it was howling a gale downwind. He hit driver so far over the green his shorter hitting partner had a full 9 iron back!

Not really something to be proud of but imagining the scene made me giggle.

He also hit 3 wood over the back of our 310yd par 4 12th.

Interestingly enough the new USGA course rating system being implemented gives a view of what a scratch golfer would normally expect to hit a driver.

For men - assuming normal weather conditions and a flat fairway the carry from the tee would be 230 yds with 20 yds carry = 250 yds total.

Equivalent for a woman scratch player would be 190 plus 20 = 210.

Obviously this is modified for downhill / uphill slope and variousother factors but it gives a feel for how much further the pros hit it compared with a top amateur.

Tour distances are one thing but they pale to insignificance once we move on to "forum distances".

Some on here make Rory and Dustin look short
