Recently enjoyed a few days walking in Swaledale and Wensledale and was stunned to see the efforts the small villages had made on Le Tour route.
Painted yellow bikes, banners and flowers are everywhere, it should be quite a spectacle.
It seems like every third field has been turned into camp sites as nothing moves on the route for 12 hours.
What's the yellow bike tradition all about?

Anyone going?
If so you should have a ball.
Beers good too.

Can't wait for it, always wanted to see the tour and now it's only an hours drive away.

Seems some weird routings though! And how come the finish in one place and start the next stage miles away! I thought harrogate to york was far enough, but then sheffield to cambridge......

That's what they do with the tour, even in France they finish a stage then fly to the start of the next stage. The routines for the yorkshire stages are all for the sales and penines and to showcase what Yorkshire has to offer for tourists.

Coming down or up the Buttertubs road would be an interesting place to spectate.

On a tight turn at Mucker someone has installed a crashed yellow bike into the wall of a house.
Looks very funny.

Have you heard the reason why they picked Yorkshire? :D

So all the cyclists will pedal faster to get out of there

Despite their best efforts of the drug cheats to put me off it for life, I've loved the Tour for years. Was lucky enough to see the final stage on The Champs Elysee a few years ago and watch the highlights it on TV every day. I'll probably go to Sheffield to see it there, great to see it coming to the UK and great for Yorkshire.

Baaaa baaaaa  :D

A few years ago it came about a mile from our house in Kent and I would urge you, if you live anywhere near the route, go and see it. Yes it flashed by in a couple of minutes but it's a real spectacle. First there were load of "tour sales vehicles" selling flags and all sorts of things, then some team vehicles, then we heard and finally saw the helicopters who were relaying the television, then the cyclists flashed through and support cars and suddenly it was over!

You may only see it once, I'm no cyclist but I urge you not to miss it!

I was in Skipton a couple of weeks ago and there was a big yellow bike on the side of the church.

am hoping to be able to get near enough to the route to be able to walk and watch them go by, not too confident though.

Second that, it is something else, saw the last stage in Paris once. Shame about the bunting in Masham though…..

You couldn't make it up!

I'm a big cycling fan. Used to do a lot of racing, still would be it it wasn't for a knackered knee. Might shoot up to London for the Monday stage but its a not a circuit finish so given that it will be heaving I will probably just watch on tv.

Oh. My. God.

Made the mistake of watching the Tour pass on a flat bit. The bunch passed in what seemed like a second - if I'd blinked I would have missed it.Pick a spot where the gradient is at least slowing them down a bit!

I watched over 20 years ago near Portsmouth, on a couple of hills at least we saw them for a few seconds rather than a blink, the build up to actual race is fantastic

A great day out wish it was a bit closer to us down south

I was at my mum and dads in france a few years back when the tour went through their local town (which is a HUGE honour for a town apparently) , its such a spectacle, it is the biggest event in France i reckon (where they are anyway) its like a carnival the whole few weeks its on, they go mental for it!

If you get the chance to see it in the UK, grab it!
