So I happened to mention on Twitter that I'd won the FedEx Challenge Cup at Royal Lytham and that my TM SLDR played a big part.
Didn't know that, MANY congrats mate  ......hope to catch up one day soon![]()
OK the congratulatory tweet from Justin Rose must be the icing on the cake
Nice one. FedEx - isn't that the one with the $10 million first prize?
they must be increasing their budget to afford a campaign picture of George Clooney :clap:
Well done Rick, this silver patch must translate to Cat 1 soon. How was the scoring at Lytham?
It was pretty brutal Paul. Although the wind didn't feel as bad as Hoylake, it was definitely at least a 2 club wind. Front 9 wasn't too bad as it was mainly with us, but with 206 bunkers it was never going to be easy. Any fairway bunkers hit ended up as a penalty shot in effect as it was a 58 degree wedge out at best.
The green side bunkers were cavernous and exposed anyone with a poor bunker technique.
I went out in 3 over gross for 19 points, then hit the wind on the way back and started with 3 straight 1 pointers. Got it back and a par on the last would have given me 34 points which I would have been very happy with.
However when I 3 putted for my 1st blob of the day I thought I'd blown it. Seriously didn't think 32 would get anything. 27 was the best score in my group, and as we the others came in I was overhearing a lot of scores in the 20's...........I started to think I might sneak a top 3 place and even when everyone was in I didn't think I'd win as the scores weren't being announced by the organisers.
As we were heading back to the hotel to get changed, the organiser approached me and said "IF hypothetically you have won, can you come back here with me early as the pro shop closes at 7 pm to spend the vouchers?"
Even then I didn't dare think I'd won it, thinking that maybe there were vouchers for the top 3, but when I met him in the hotel car park and we were the only 2, I then knew 100% that I'd done it.
In the end 30 points was the next best score.
It's definitely one of the hardest courses I've ever played, and although I went in lots of green side bunkers, I managed to get out of all of them 1st time and up and downed quite a few.
I think it was a combination of missing nearly all the fairway bunkers and good greenside bunker play that made the difference.
