Evening all.....
Today i drove 40 miles for a club fitting.Irons...It was something that i was always a bit sceptical about as i wondered why golfers of yesteryear were able to play fine with clubs off the shelf.

Anyway i had a fair idea of what i was after before i went in but i left it up to the fitter to decide what was best for me.

I brought along my current S2's cast and hit a few balls with these for him.
His conclusion was that the shafts were wrong for my swing (too soft).I was getting good distance but was spraying the ball about a bit.

I had bought these after toying with W/S FG Tours and got them in REG shafts off the shelf thinking that it would help me slow down my swing playing regular shafts....

My driver Swing speed was averaging 105 mph and i was carrying my 8 iron av 145 yrds...
I hit the Ping i15 with AWT stiff shaft and immediately my dispersion closed in comparison to my current irons which confused me because i thought that players irons were harder to hit.I was hitting them much straighter than my current irons too.
The ball flight was slightly higher but far more consistant.
I then hit the Cobra S2 forged in stiff Nippon NS PRO 1130 shafts...
I really liked the cobra's. The weight was nice and even though my distance was similar to my current irons again the dispersion is what sold me.

So im now torn between the Pings and the Cobra's...
The pings have that lovely matt finish and nice weight.
The club looks great behind the ball .
the graphics may seem a little busy to some but i quite like them.
The Cobra's are slightly heavier and have a buttery soft feel at impact.
They have a more prominant cavity but are a more classic shape and look to the Pings.

What do i do? Help!

Reading your comments i would say that :

1) Your head wants the pings. They make better "business" sense. Higher ball flight and a narrow dispersion rate. Thats what i would go for

2) Looking at the rest of your bag and your photo you heart wants the cobras.

At the end of the day i would play with a shovel and a mallet if it got my handicap down so i am afraid to say it but ...

The decision is yours !

Good luck with what ever you decide to go for

I've got a demo set of I15 at the moment and loved them on the range yesterday. I've not hit and Cobra clubs so don't know how they feel. I have to say it is a close call between the TP's I already have which a bit like the S2's, are a classic club but without too much of a cavity and the I15's which don't look so great but are a great club and which I'm hitting particularly well. I'm going to wait until the course is back on full greens and give the I15's a proper testing and have a think about it.

Ya Homer....There is just something about the Pings that i just cant quite put my finger on.....They are ugly to some but there like an old shoe, you know they look out of place and worn but there damn comfortable!

I hit both equally well but i am a bit Obsessive Compulsive when it comes to clubs....I prefer them all the same family if i can help it....If i go the ping route then ill end up changing the whole lot again.
:)

It's just down to these two clubs now? You won't look at anything elce?

/points at the Mizuno MP53

Edit: I was just thinking about what you said and my guess is that its the stiffer shaft that maybe helping keep your ball online more than the players head. Have you thought about re shafting you current irons?

I would be inclined to delay the purchase until you are sure. It looks like the pro really helped switching you to a stiffer shaft. Is it possible that you prefer the shaft in the cobras but the look of the ping heads? Maybe switch them and you might get everything you want, just an idea.

Or just wait for better weather and then practice a lot more with clubs of both sets until you are sure which club feels right and gives the best results, dont rush you might regret it.

Like you I was cynical about C/F but I am convinced now that its the way to go. I will get C/F next time I replace my irons early next year. Please keep us posted on your progress.

If you can deal with the shame (and the look) of the Pings then I'd go for them, it will take 'blaming your equipment' out of the equation.

Sent my I15's back to the pro shop today as the forecast is telling me we won't be seeing an open golf course around these parts anytime soon with snow forecast tonight. It's a gutter as I was really enjoying them and looking forward to getting out and hitting them on the course (or at least the practice ground off grass).

Still my credit card can stop shaking in fear. HID will probably be relieved too

Got a demo set at the moment with an option to buy a set at a reasonable price.
