hopefully in the next few weeks i going to try my hand at a top end putter like a scotty cameron, mizuno or a ping redwood just wondered what you guys think of any of them to recommend, and if you got fitted for it as well

thanks in advance

Have had a fair few Scotty's,currently own a Newport 2 Stainless with a Baby T grip. Every one has been excellent and I would reccommend them to anybody. The quality is second to none even really expensive stuff like Whitlams etc.

In my bag right now is a Redwood and I love it however it is the only one I have tried so cant comment more than that.

Difficult to say how you'll get on; I've got 5 putters (last count) and t.b.h. the price seems irrelevant to the performance. I love them for the design and the "confidence factor" of having a quality looking piece of kit in front of me.

I always liked a classy blade putter and have had a few pings, mizunos and odysseys. It's all in the balance and weight and SHAFT/HEAD LIE angle for me. I love all the modern odyssey putters but most have a very flat lie for me and to get my head over the ball requires me to have my hands rather too close to my body. I like an upright putter, one that swings back balanced and doesn't want to flip closed through the shot.

Say what you like, and choose whatever feels good, but a beautifully made piece of kit is more "wow" for me in a putter than any other club. My current putter is a classic 90s mallet (found new on ebay). I struggle with it a bit, but it's classy engineering.....bobby grace design.

I use the Ping Craz-e as stated below(don't know if that's classed as top end, however?).

I was custom fit for it and it has saved me 3-4 putts per round.

Mind you, I'm still pretty useless at putting but that's more down to technique!

I have a RIFE which I really rate. I also have a Mizzy Bettinardi CO6 which is also a superb putter for slower greens (prob getting it back out again with all this rain). This is face balanced, ideal for straight back, straight through stroke.

Tried the Scotty Newport detour and I don’t see how it costs that much. It’s a nice putter but feels flimsy to me and I don’t like the grip. The latest Rossa spider feels much better but I can’t help feeling the shape is more gimmick than anything else. I know a one handicapper who’s ditched his already. I like the Zen oracle it feels really good with a soft ball strike. Finally, just because I’ve got a Yes putter doesn’t mean they’re the best but they do seem to have a putter of all shapes and sizes that should suite everyone’s taste’s. In saying that, the one handicapper doesn’t like them.

Have they got putters in confused.com :D :D :D

I tried a number of decent putters out at AG, pro shop and NB and decided on the Scotty Cameron Red X3 - problem was I couldn't affort it so scanned eBay for a while and eventually got one for £106.

Can't recommend it enough - sooooo much feel and control; made my Ping Anser (from the 90's) feel like a hockey stick. There is really a difference with top end putters but you should go try a few before committing.

What price would be classed as top end ? I tried out an Odyssey white hot 2-ball in AG yesterday and found myself very impressed with it. It was amazing though how much more comfortable it felt for me using the shorter shafted model ( 31" i think ) . I wouldn't have thought a 2 inch variance on a putter shaft would have made that much difference but it was very noticeable for my stroke.
Am seriously thinking of purchasing one once pay day arrives

I tried out loads of putters before i got my odyssey. I didn't really like the blade style as i was crud at alignment, but now I have a better technique I wonder if my current (fangs) suits me best.

I wont go and try any others now as I know I will want to splash the cash and I dont really need too, I just need to practice more with what I have.

Defo get fitted for your putter, your only putting(no pun intended) yourself out if you don't.

i REALLY find it difficult to line up my putts (strange cos i'm pretty good at snooker!) - do i need a mallet to aid with alignment rather than a blade type putter?

Never really thought about being fitted for a putter.

Where would you get it done?

My handicap has fluctuated between 5 and 6 for the last 12 years and to be honest it's my putting which is holding me back.

Have to say I have just received a TM Rossa Spider courtesy of our favourite golf magazine for an article due to be published in Septembers issue.

I have to say the shape may be a gimmick but performance wise it is one of the best putters I have used in 30+ years of golf (including Ansers, Camerons and Odysseys). The weight and design make it very hard (you almost need to be deliberate) to twist the putter through impact and it has a great overall balance. The face produces a crisp feel (not to everyones taste I agree) and the 14 lines really get the ball rolling.

I have tried a lot of top range putters. I personally like the odyssey 2ball blade (XG2) and still have my original Ping Anser blade. Of the newer blades, I find the Yes putters a little chunky in design and they don't look good behind the ball or sit well for me. The Camerons are very good but I have always struggled a) with the price and b) with the feel. On the Newport 2 I found it quite a soft feel and the other I had (can't remeber which one - only had it a metter of weeks) it felt very sharp off the face

I had mine fitted by my club pro; Ping would almost certainly do it as would any professional club fitter.
Essentially it was a case of establishing what putter balance best suited my swing. Then adjusting length to suit me. However it is possible to have loft/lie adjustments made with some putters but as I like mine to sit square on the ground, which it did straight out of the bag, this wasn't necessary.
Oh, and Nick Faldo advocates a loft of at least 5 deg for UK greens (less for US (and Spain ?)).

i like the tm spider when i tried it out just cant get my head around the shape but it is so well balanced,i got a yes putter think its a natalie and think they are useless they either come off the face hot or dead plus dont like the sound, would love a cameron really, got a few hours spare so its off to the practise putting green for me
