Alright all, obviously alot of it is down to opinion. But the reason I ask is, I'm looking for somewhere really nice to take the old man for his birthday. Wanted to keep it local so we could get a lift/have a few bevvys after. Recommendations from anyone in the know would be great. In the process of getting a county card so I reckon cost wouldn't be an issue should we get them in time.

Cheers

Depends on ability and location, but three of the more local one's to Nottingham that are decent are the Nottinghamshire (Cotgrave), Norwood (Southwell) and Wollaton Park.
Haven't played Wollaton but have heard good things about it. The Nottinghamshire has had (and is still having) some work done on it, but it's starting to look great. Norwood is a nice and flattish course with some interesting holes and set in a nice location.
I'm at Mapperley which is a tough hilly course. I like it but plenty of people don't due to a couple of blind holes and hardly ever having a flat lie. Friendly clubhouse and good food though :)

Others to note are Ruddington, which is always nice but can be a bit tight on the fairways, and Oakmere at Oxton which is also having some money spent on it this year.
There are other courses that are considered better, but are further out. Which side of Nottingham are you on?

Notts, Sherwood and Coxmoor.

Is the right answer. By miles. And Notts (Hollinwell) is head and shoulders above the other two in my view as well.

If they are too costly then Worksop is worth a look.

Totally correct and if your planning on using a county card you need to check with each club as I don't think any off them participate in the scheme.

All of which I agree with, but require a certain amount of traveling, which the OP said he didn't want to do as he wanted to have a few 'bevvies'.
They are pretty special though compared with the others.

Hollinwell is amazing. Seeing as it's a birthday the cost should not be a consideration. The standard of the course outweighs the extra cash. Get it booked

Notts is my fav course in the UK.

although i have a feeling, St Georges Hill might trump it tommorow!

They are quite different but I would personally put St Georges Hill above Notts, even though it has a couple of weak holes. I hope you get good weather. If you do, you are in for a treat. 13th is my favourite hole.

I played St Georges Hill two weeks ago and it was in excellent condition for the time of year.

Managed to sneak the lowest gross prize too. :)

Nice to hear my club get a mention. But for location to Notts centre would deffo consider Wollaton. When he sees fifty deer stood on the fairway with a seven foot stag guarding them have your camera ready. Lovely course and clubhouse. Re getting the County card. We have got ours as we are playing the Wollaton open and the card drops the price to £25 as our fourbalI for the day is having a play before the open.

Much appreciated guys. As for which side of nottingham I'm on I'm about 3 miles outside the city centre. Will take a good look into what's been mentioned. The nottingham, sherwood and Norwood were the 3 I got mentioned by a mate. Wasn't far off by what everyone has mentioned. Cheers for the info

Would agree the courses in North Notts are the best ones, if you want to be close to Nottingham city centre, then where I am am member The Nottinghamshire (2 courses lots of work been and being done) Wollaton Park which is in a fantastic setting, Mapperley which is hilly but nice course. Beeston Fields or not far North Ramsdale and Springwater.

If you don't mind the travel and cost Hollinwell unless idiots have been moto crossing on it again

If you do play norwood play off the yellows. Played yesterday off the whites and it was ridiculously long.
If it is midweek give me a shout when you are goin and i will sign you in. We have two fourball tee times booked on a thurs an tues (10-11am) and there will be room. It could work out cheaper than a county card

I have edited a post I made on another thread about a month ago:

I have lived in Nottinghamshire most of my life, and since returning to the game about three years ago I have played quite a lot of the courses here.

Beeston Fields - pleasant parkland course around 4 miles west of Nottingham, in good condition in summer.

Bulwell Forest - great little municipal (where I started playing as a kid ), but less than 6,000 yards.

Chilwell Manor - parkland course, they have modified the greens in recent years and they are as slopey as the fairways are flat. It's about 6,200 yards, somewhat featureless in my opinion.

Coxmoor - quality course in North Notts. Not as tough as Sherwood Forest and Notts (Hollinwell), which it is close to, but it is a proper test with some lovely holes.

Mapperley - short and very hilly, lots of friendly members.

Newark - bit of a trek from Nottingham, Good test of golf.

Norwood Park - near Southwell, so again a bit of a trek. Only played it once, the greens were fantastic in March! It is a very innovative club.

Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell) - the best known course in Nottinghamshire, and easily the toughest test of golf. Shame about the bikers that I understand have returned to do more damage to the course.

Radcliffe on Trent - our County Course for 2016. I have never enjoyed playing it, but it is a decent parkland test and the greens are always fast and true.

Ruddington Grange - Not far from the city, and easily accessible. Relatively new (20 odd years old) and maturing, but a bit dull.

Rufford Park - nice setting not far from Rufford Abbey north of the city, and an enjoyable if not especially tough test. Great views.

Sherwood Forest - Nottinghamshire's second course in terms of difficulty and overall quality. Always a joy to play there, and hardly anyone on the course when I have been.

Stanton on the Wolds - a favourite of mine because it seems to suit my eye. South of Nottingham, another parkland course that is in good condition.

The Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club (aka Cotgrave) - two courses here, about 25 years old with a heck of a lot of money spent on them (and they are still upgrading). Both enjoyable courses, the Open is the harder of the two.

Wollaton Park - parkland course of around 6,400 yards about 3 miles from the centre of Nottingham overlooked by a 16th Century Elizabethan Hall in a large park. Deer roam over the course, which is has a lot of interesting holes, particularly on the back 9. My home course, so I am a bit biased!

Worksop - not been here recently, but by repute a very good test of golf. North Nottinghamshire so a good drive from the city.

Hope that helps a little

Not played any others but can definitely recommend Wollaton.
My main tip would be, don't use the deer's location as a reference to where a ball may have gone into the rough. They have a tendency to move!

I have played a course which is classed as a Derbyshire course, but is nearby. Erewash Valley, a decent course just 7 miles from Nottingham city centre, near to the M1 junction.
