Top 10 Courses in Surrey

Slightly confusing list - not sure it is in order rather than just their top ten - since at #10 - Sunningdale's description starts 'Only Wentworth can rival Sunningdale for the title of Surrey's premier golf course' with Wentworth West Course at #4

Certainly not THE 10 top courses in Surrey imo.

10 (top) courses in Surrey to play perhaps.

Remember that Post and Visit counts is part of how a web site can be funded/advertisers attracted. So a bit of controversy sometimes helps!

Here's my top ten that I have played in a rough order of preference, for Surrey:

1. Sunningdale Old
2. St Georges Hill
3. Hankley Common
4. Sunningdale New
5. West Hill
6. Wentworth West
7. Worplesdon
8. Hindhead
9. New Zealand
10. Walton Heath

Honourable mentions also for Tandridge, The Wisley, Foxhills, Kingswood, The RAC Club and the other Wentworth courses.

I haven't played the Addington, Queenwood or Royal Wimbledon so can't comment but would guess that these may figure too.

A great county for golf though. Probably the best county for top courses in England.

I haven't played the Addington,

That's a surprise. Worth doing so imo, but wait until Autumn when the ball doesn't simply bounce off the sloping non-watered fairways. Some really quite good, if quirky, holes - though it pays to know where the line is on several. Par 3 start - though I don't believe it was originally designed that way.

Only problem is your top Surrey course is in Berkshire!

Yes, it is a very quirky old school. Two fav holes come after each other - the par 5 with multiple levels (12th) in the fairway+rough which means you can't just bomb it unless you want lady luck to help; then the long par 3 (13th) over a small valley to a raised green. This is a big hit at the best of times. The photo on the main webpage shows this hole first up.

And its a pain to get to in the rush hour!

The Addington won't force it's way in there Snelly.

Some amazing holes, but too many ordinary and a joke hole or two to put me off.

Young lad I played with yesteday evening happens to be a caddie at Queenwood - told me it's beautiful - but incredibly exclusive. He caddied for Ernie Els recently.

The problem with these review sites is who writes them. I've seen so many where Joe Public rates a course and that ultimately produces a ranking. The issue lies with the quality and perception of these golfers (no disrespect to the chompers or weekend warriors) but Fred from the local pub society who doesn't have a handicap has a different perception of a good course to a scratch golfer. He wants a wide open field where he can find his ball and have a chance of making the odd par compared to someone looking for testing 2nd shots into a well guarded green.

Funnily enough that's what the young lad said comparing Queenwood and our track. He finds Queenwood a lot easierto play as he can spray the ball all over the place and not get into trouble - our wee track is tight. But Queenwood looks very immaculate.

Not a fan of Woking then Snelly ?

I would give Coombe Hill a mention in dispatches.
