Took the putter plunge

Having only owned 3 putters in my life (not a spring chicken) and after a year of woeful putting I've taken the plunge and bought a SC Newport 2.5 :D tried it and 5 others for an hour and the 2.5 sits well and has a larger head than anything I've had up to now, plus it seems to have a very solid feel - but soft- off the face, I'm going to record all putts each round now and hoping it's a major improvement.

Good choice!

I bought one last year with some birthday and windfall money and it is beautiful. Like putting with a surgical instrument. As you say the feel is soft but solid. As someone who has mostly used mallets I thought I would find it hard to adjust, and nearly went for the fast back but I find the very precise shape of the head makes squaring it up really easy.

Enjoy!

I'm just about 5'7" in my golf shoes and I went for the 34 inch shaft with standard lie. My pro (one of the old school) had an adjustable ping putter with a telescopic shaft and pivoting head that he sets up for your putting position then takes the readings, which gave the above result, which he then ordered in direct from Titlesist UK. Pretty much all the putters I have had have been 34 inch. Also went for the 350g head which he said would work best on our greens.

Can I ask how tall are you and how long is the putter please?

5' 9 and 34"

Can I ask why?

I was just wondering if you had considered the length of the putter when you chose it.

Mashie, those adjustable putters are great for fitting people. Saves having 50 putters in the shop

Cheers Bob. Yes it is a nice simple bit of kit. Head I think was an old Ping Anser or something similar. Looked like it came from the 70's/80's. You just set up in your normal position and the adjustable bits just adjust themselves to your stance and posture. The pro then just takes the readings. Needed a magnifying glass to read off the lie scale though.

Seems to work as I'm loving the Scotty. Some say they are over priced and maybe they are (still cheaper than an R11) but I had a c**p year last year so I decided to treat myself. One of the few things I've got that I feel is the best that money can buy. Was tempted by a Bettinardi but the Scotty was.....shiney. :D

I have one on loan at the moment, its the 2.5 with an insert as I seem to get better feel with inserts.

The putter is actually Fundys but he may have to prise out our of my cold dead hands when he wants it back.

I am not yet used to it.. on the practice ground it is the nicest putter I have ever used, its so light you can really hit your putts. The down side of that is that in a game if you chicken out the put can be very short.

I need to spend some time with it, but I do really think its special already.

didnt know they did an insert one for the 2.5, thought it was all milled 303 steel. I find it a heavier putter than normal as well, sure its a SC?

of course, I had a 35" cut to 32" last year which helped for a short while but this 34" feels comfortable which is 80% of the battle I feel.

Ah, Thanks, I was only thinking about the new models but some of these older ones look fantastic.
One thing though, I've had to get a much thicker grip, these Titleist SC grips are very small bringing the hands too much into play IMO
