and he loved it, in the main.
I have never pushed him into playing, simply he has beeen going to a local field where he has been hitting some balls, so i decided the time was right to structure him.

He struggled a bit more than he expected as in the past he has just been hitting the ball, it did not matter where it ended. Today he learned the opposite is true.

He made the usual errors, lifting head, feet not secure and topping too many - but i did not expect anything else on his first round.

The point of my point is he was using my old set, and it was only on the second 9 that I realised MY error - being only 13 he is much shorter than I, and he was gripping the shaft too high up, when we adjusted that he hit the ball much better.

He is now getting Pro lessons for his birthday, but my query to you guys is - is it worth getting my old clubs shortened or as he is still learning, and deciding if he likes it I guess, leave well alone and get him his own set for Xmas.
Obviously i would love to be able to buy him his own set now alas funds do not allow this, as yet.

What do you guys think???

Mark

Personally of course. I'd get a junior set (perhaps half set) for him. The shafts, grips, head weights and swing weights are better suited to the smaller frame.

I'd be surprised if you can your old set cut down and re-gripped for the cost of a half junior set.

I'm looking forward to my turn! Bless him though, he only turns 3 in November!!

my step-daughters dad was a teaching pro, and he has bought her a junior set - but these are too small for Dominic to use, so he is in-between clubs as it where....

I would get him a proper half set of junior clubs as cutting full size shafts will seriously affect the swing weight. A nice half set of matched clubs for his height will give him the confidence to put the basics from the lessons into practice. Watch it though or he'll soon be beating you!

ok, so cutting down my old clubs is out.

I would love to buy him his own half-set, but if he doesnt take to it that's money wasted. Bearing in mind cash is a bit tight at the moment is he ok using my old set for now?

If he still likes the game as Xmas i would buy him his own, and get him to pay for lessons with his xmas money.....?????

I got my boy (8) some Ben Sayers clubs from ebay. Not the greatest things but the shafts are flexible enough tohelp him get the ball in the air. Came with a wood, 5,7 and 9 irons and a putter in a matching bag all for £25 including carriage. If The Boy doesn't take to it, they'll go back on ebay and if I get £15 for them I'll be happy. T this age they grow so quick its almost not worth spending decent money unless they're going to stick with it.

I too was going to suggest a ladies set. I used my mums when i was 13. In those days though there were not many ladies sets in the horrific colours you can get these days

My lad has just turned 9, he's been practicing for about a year now. At first he just came along because me and the missus were going, he was OK, but more interested in football, now I can't keep him away. I splashed a whopping £30 on a junior set of Dunlop Loco's from Chavworld, errr I mean SportsWorld (aka sportsdirect.com) about a year back. He's already on the verge of outgrowing them and am looking at options to replace. Sportsworld also sell individual junior clubs for about £3 - £5 each.

Nev Bob do a junior option based on height for about £90, includes standbag, 3 wood, hybrid, a couple of short irons and a putter. AG have junior options too although I haven't checked the prices on them. Cobra do a nice option at a nicer price......?

At the moment, they are growing too fast and their priorities change with the wind. Personally, I'd go with the cheapest option available for now, if he's still playing in 6-12 months, then perhaps consider amore expensive set then.

What age can you start getting your kids into golf at?

Our wee one is only 1 but i'm sure she'll be good.... and a lefty by the looks of it!

Mark, if you are a member of a club, why not ask the pro what he has 'out the back'
Most pros give junior coaching so will have junior clubs he may be able to borrow for a while.
And while your at, enrol your son. Lots of pros give free coaching for kids :)

He is a member, being a member of staff my membership covers all family members.
The Club does not have a Pro as such, but there is a Pro affiliated to teh club, i do not know him though.

To be honest i don't know many members at the club.

I bought my 13 year old Son a set of ladies clubs. He was too small to use my old set, and too big to use junior clubs.
They are the perfect size for him, he got the whole lot of irons, graphite shafted, (including a hybrid) and a wood for less than £50.00
He seems to be getting on very well with them, and once he has outgrown them he can progress up to my old John Letters Trilogy irons.
There are lots of ladies sets around that are competitively priced, and they don't have to be pink!!
Rob

There you go!! These will do him............

Don't look like ladies clubs at all, and will last him a good while until he finds out whether he likes it or not. And you'd most probably get £25.00 at a boot fair for them in a couple of years time so it's only cost you £25.00 to kit him out for two years... ;) ;) ;)

Mark does your club have a Junior section I know ours are always selling their clubs as they out grow them.

Put a notice up "wanted Half set for a Junior beginner"

Someone will have something that will suit.
