Too short for my clubs?

Been wondering for a while if my irons are too long for me since they are 'standard' length and lie and I'm only about 5ft 3in tall . Whats the likely effect of this?

I ask because it feels like I have my hands too high at address (if I let them hang naturally then the club sits so that only the heel end is touching the ground), and having had a go with a mates iron (1 inch short) at the range today it felt completely different.

Soooo... is this likely to be contributing to my problems with the more-than-occasional fat shot, and if so how much do you guys think it would cost to get my clubs (just irons?) shortened?

Hat to say without some sort of pic at address. A lot of clubs can be persuaded a couple of degrees upright and flat too so could be something to think about.

Try gripping a bit further down the shaft and see how you get on. If you hit the ball better then your pro should be able to cut a bit off the shaft for you. ;)

If your clubs are sitting "toe up" at address then they are more than likely too long for you and need adjusting. Shorter shafts should give you more control and bring the head of the club flatter to the ground, although you still want a little bit of "toe up".
Do you pull a lot of your iron shots? A club that sits too "toe up" is likely to have the heel of the club digging in and will force the club head to hood itself at impact therefore either causing pulled or hooked shots..... similar to playing a ball "above your feet"

I have the same problem being the same height as you. I have used shorter club but now use standard.

Before you have them taken down get the lie adjusted us wee fellows need to have negative lie mine are 4 degrees down?

Your hands being high I suggest is due to your set up mine don't get high because my clubs.

Potor, the first thing I suggest you do is get down to your local pro shop and tell him/her of your concerns.
He should then test you on an impact board.
This involves sticking some impact tape to the sole of an iron and get you to hit balls off a hard board.
When the club makes impact with the board it will leave a small mark on the tape which will show which part of the sole hit the board...heal/middle or toe.
That way you'll be certain if they are too long for you.
When I last worked in a workshop 3 years ago, we charged £1.50 per club to shorten them. So allowing for a bit of inflation, shouldn't be much more than £2 each.
HTH :)
