Too much top spin?

Went to the driving range earlier, hit the ball quite well, not many "loose" shots.
Anyway I noticed most seemed to kind of die in the air and almost dip down after around 120-150 yards (hitting a 16 degree hybrid). They did however mainly roll on to around 200 yards and 240 on the rare really sweet one.
I'm not really fussed about being a big hitter, I'd rather keep them in play but I can't help thinking I'm losing distance somewhere.
Ball flight on the majority was down the middle with a hint of slice (is that fade?) so I imagine I'm hitting the ball on the up or summat.
My thinking is if I'm hitting the ball on the up it will put top spin onto it which will eventually drag the ball back to earth.
Does that sound about right?

Tried loads of stuff to put it right but nothing worked, I know the answer, get lessons but I'd like to reach a point where I'm no longer progressing before I have another.

whilst there's logic to your conclusion it would be extremely unlikely with a 16 degree lofted club.

equally the ball's not going to stay in the air for 120 yards with 'top spin' eiither - at most 20.

but, on the other hand, they don't need top spin, just a lack of sufficient backspin! It can happen on occassion when the ball is thinned (hit with the leading edge), but it's rare to be able to do it consistently! :)

Unless a shot is actually 'topped', there's no way you put topspin on a ball with a golf shot.

You may put less backspin than desirable and there may be a 'sidepin' element (or 'spin axis').

More likely to be dodgy Range Balls imo.

Thanks chaps, really enjoyed yesterdays session despite it being 1 million degrees
Next is to work on why I rotate my hands on impact when I try to do the correct swing plane.
