Too many Clubs?

Played in a 3 club and putter medal for the first time yesterday, and it was a refreshing change.

I had my 3W, 5 and 9 iron with me and found great satisfaction playing a whole range of shots that I would not normally attempt.
I ended up with a nett 67, 2 under my handicap and am seriously considering leaving some clubs in the car boot at the next medal.

Does anyone else think we have too many clubs in the bag and that we can sometimes over complicate things?

Yes, but as long as I am allowed to carry them, I will do.

For instance, I think I can play every type of wedge shot with a 56° sand wedge. High flop shots, bunker shots, flat spinny pitches, etc.
However, I carry two other wedges, and will continue to do so. I used to carry 3 spares, but have weened myself down to two.

We always get a few players returning good scores in 3 clubs comps, I'm convinced it's down to one thing - not having a driver.
Everyone's obsessed about hitting driver as far as they can, when they find they actually hit more fairways without it that's when they score better.

All depends on how you play. If I can NOT take the driver, that's the good play for me. By not taking the big dog at all, I'm resigning myself to 2 or 3 more bogeys.....which is fine off 12, but off a h'cap like yours....

Played in a fun event some time ago whilst on holiday on Arran. Played a one club and putter charity event on a wee nine hole course. Worked out what club suited the par 3s best and what could get me on to par 4s in two or three strokes. Played really well and shot 2 or 3 over par gross!
One of the best ball striking days ever. You concentrate on each shot and with a more lofted club, it's less likely that you will duff the shot. Good fun whilst it lasted!
