Just watching it on tonight's news and it has shown a bloke walking a dog and someone with a wheelchair getting lashed by the waves.
it has confirmed my belief that some people are born as thick as pigs hit.

Think it was a video released by the Norfolk RNLI. They are a bit daft around here!

No doubt some will learn the hard way,the power of the sea.

We had spring tide about 3 years ago. Check out the Golspie video on the net.
Nairn wasn't hit so bad,but still had rocks washed onto the cause that were so large it took a JCB to move them and that is with 20 to 30 foot sea wall.

I am still wondering how you can have a spring high tide in winter

You get a Spring Tide whenever the Sun and the Moon line up on either the same side of the Earth or on opposite sides. The extra gravitational pull from these two bodies then causes higher than normal tides.

It's the tide 'springing forth'! Nothing to do with Spring as a season (though things also 'spring' in Spring!)

And (at last) Del is correct - Spring Tides happen around New and Full moon - when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned.

Tides are caused primarily by the gravitational effect of the Moon (one of Isaac Newton's 'discoveries') with a small amount of 'help' from that of the Sun. It happens on both sides of the earth, because the Earth having a greater Mass than the oceans, so actually moves more (closer to the Moon) relative to the oceans. There are lots of other forces/effects involved!
