Found it interesting to read on the hompage of GM that Tom uses G5 woods, suprised that he would not have the latest gear in his bag, although maybe he justs feels more comfortable with them, your thoughts? :)

Simple G5 and i5 range was immense.

Westwood still uses a G10 driver and i10 irons.

Both valid points, I haven't tried any ping gear so can't compare the difference between a G20 and a G5, anyone that has how do they compare in terms of performance?

He's probably just comfortable with them and in fairness to Ping they've left him be....He's still advertising the company and he's not the only one using some of Pings older stuff...

There are still some Pro's on tour using i5 irons and as was said above Westwood is still using i10 irons as well as Mark Wilson...

It just goes to show that there maybe isnt a whole pile of difference between the current Ping offerings and their older stuff......

i've been looking at what's in the bag for a few tour pro's, quite a lot of them have models from a few years back,

got my thinking is there a club that i have "upgraded" that looking back probably wasn't an improvent

i had a callaway steel head 3 wood that was a superb club, gave it away to a friend when i upgraded to a cleveland, looking back i wish i kept it now and saved my money

anybody had a similar club they regret upgrading...?

Not really had that situation yet as im only playing 2 years but from talking with the lads here on the forum i dont think that there would be a huge performance increase in going from my i10's to there replacement i15 irons

I was given a callaway 3 wood steelhead by a friend and its turned out to be the best club I have in the bag, reliable and scary long compared to the driver, great sound from it as well:)
Dreading the day the shaft snaps or it gets lost or something

miguel angel jimenez was still using Ping TiSi fairway wood at the Open. It isnt unherd of for Pro's to be using very old gear though, Faldo was using a MacGregor M85W persimmon driver in the late 80's and it dated from the 50's

Top pros rely so much on feel and familiarity with the response from the club face that changing is not always worthwhile. They'd rather stick to clubs that they know perfectly than change to something different and learn that feel all over again.

The newer model needs to offer a significant performance advantage to make them switch. Case in point, the number of TM staff pros (and others) who are using the R11 driver, but have stuck with R9 fairway woods.

Good point Monty

Kaymer after the R11 release was still using an R9 SuperTri Driver for a time.

Just goes to show in some instances newer isn't always better.
