Got my mag through the door today and perusing the pages I stumbled across Fish testing the drivers out.Busy reading the results now. Might be in the market for a new one now of the results are good.

So Robin with a 15 handicap is Fish! Who knew. Actually he did mention in a post that he was testing a lot of drivers recently come to think of it. Can't believe these golf whores who flit between magazines always on the look out for free stuff. Disgraceful behavior. And don't you know that's Dufferman's job anyway.;)

Congrats on the handicap cut fishy, I must've missed your results.

I will defend the fish!

Joel from TG (soon to be at GM!) dropped me an email out of the blue asking if i would like to go, I did this test for TG about 4 years ago! Anyway, last minute, i couldnt go and suggested Fish could fill my place (local to belfry, semi retired and all round good egg). He was asked to use my handicap as they needed a mix of levels. I dont believe he has had a big cut!! Although on a good day we all know he can play to 15 or better!

No whoring was involved and no freebies given out! In fact, i believe Robin had to buy his own coffee!!

The defence rest m'lud

Great experience, but all I got was a free blister for 2-days of hitting some great, and some not so great drivers.

Happy to answer any questions regarding any of them now the publication is out.

Just finished reading the results.Robin your stats were better with the regular shafts. Are you going to swap or stick to stiff?

Sticking to my stiff in the SLDR as it was fitted and matched to me by the TM guys at the Belfry.

Some of the shafts are not that different between manufacturers "A" regular and manufacturers "B" stiff, it isn't that black & white and is quite a minefield when you hear and get all the spec.

They didn't slip you any freebies for your 2 days of testing for them? Cheapskates.

OK, could you honestly tell the difference between the premium drivers (say £300 plus) and the rest? As from the looks of your yardages it seems that the differences in distance could possibly be as much explained by quality of strike than quality of the driver? Would that be fair? Do you think the premium drivers 'felt' any better for want of a better word?

I need to refer to the article and stats which I haven't seen, nothing was going very far over those 2-days for anyone, not even the pros, it was freezing cold with a slight head wind and that range is uphill, or at least it gives that impression.

What I will say is, you cannot gauge the quality of the driver by price alone, Benross is a very good example, they don't sponsor in a big way, they don't do huge amounts of costly marketing, so they put their drivers out at a reasonable and affordable price, this does not make them inferior in any way or as some people describe them, an entry level driver, they can mix it with the best of them IMO.

For me though my stand out driver which I just felt so comfortable with and once fitted I put all my drives very close with the tightest dispersion, was the Wilson D200.

What was an eye opener was that some manufacturers fitted me with reg shafts and some with stiff, some explained that their reg was equivalent to a stiff in someone else's and visa-versa! Some also had very narrow grips which I struggled with at times as I have XL hands! Its also obvious that some drivers just won't suit, some are head heavy, some are too light overall, some have a high rounded head & face and some are more aerodynamic, thin & long, it really is a case of getting out there and trying as many as you can if looking to buy and obviously get fitted as stock shafts won't suit everyone either, you cannot just look at reg or stiff, there is much more to some of the shafts, especially the Yonex ones who are specialists in graphite.

It was pretty tough though going from 1 driver to another (28 in total) hitting ball after ball in the very cold for hours, it was that cold that Joel and the others walked out the bays into the corridor to get warm as I was hitting balls then came back in once finished with that particular driver.
