I tend to always use a tee when teeing off with an iron on short holes while my partner feels it will help him improve his fairway irons shots if he tees off without a tee.
While I agree with his view in theory, I find I hit far better shots using the tees, so why disadvantage myself.

We are poor players and I would think most mid to low handicappers would never use a tee with an iron - But is this the case?

Might as well give yourself the best lie possible - always tee it up

I never understand this question.

if you can give youself a perfect lie. why wouldnt you. The pros certainly use tees with irons.

I use a tee but push it right down so that the ball is not raised, just sat nice and cleanly off the ground. In the summer, when the tee boxes are firm and dry, I often don't use a tee as the lie is so clean that it is not worth it.

There will always be arguments for not using a tee. The modern wooden (or plastic tee) is a fairly modern invention (1920s?). Mass use is probably even more recent. Prior to that a chunked up bit of ground, some soil or sand was used.

If right at the beginning of golf players saw the advantage of raising the ball off the turf when allowed why not do it now with a nice tee and give yourself a great chance of a good shot?

What he said. I always tee up given the choice. The height of the tee does vary and with very short irons it is quite low, but still always tee up.

Definitely tee it up. Why wouldn't you take the extra 10 yards that you get from a zero friction tee!!!!

Always use a tee. There's no need for me to try and pretend that somehow a tee doesn't provide me with the best tee'd ball. For most golfers I get the impression that not using a tee is a wee bit of a show-offy affectation. Though can see why you might not need to use one when hitting a wedge if the tee ground is lush.

At my club tees are required to be used. Personally I normally pick up a broken one that's been discarded and push it almost flush for wedge etc, getting higher through the bag.

All you want to do is ensure there's no grass between the club and ball. I usually have a chuckle when I see people tee the ball an inch and a half up with an iron and then wonder why the ball goes high but not very far.....

That's an odd one - a local rule I assume. Why? Players leaving their broken tees being untidy? Can't see it makes any difference to amount of divots being taken out the ground

Air causes far less friction than turf, so it definitely pays to tee the ball up. However not too high for irons, because this can cause weak shovelled shots off the top of the face that fly high but not very far!
