To sharpen or not to sharpen?

If you play in competitions you may render your club illegal, if it's just social play then yes you will probably get a bit more life out of it.

You're absolutely right, but I'd be struggling with my conscience! :o (I bought an SLDR 5-wood yesterday and I'm booked onto a Mizuno demo-day on Saturday - goy my eye on the new JPX 850 driver!) ;)

If I was playing devils advocate, how many times per round would you use a shiny new driver compared to a set of wedges for less cash than said driver

Point taken . . . but my buying decisions aren't always that rational. The Mizuno Demo-Meister is going to use a flight-scope (or similar) to prove that the JPX 850 is soooo much longer than my Cobra amp, with tighter dispersion, no doubt. I'm also testing the new T5 forged wedges, so if they're good, and common sense prevails . . . . just maybe.

It's only money and you can't take it with you. No point leaving it to the family. They'd only waste it on a good time

Thanks for the responses. First decision made - new wedges required. Now the fun starts . . trying to find some that feel right and suit my game!

It used to be easy. Wedges were wedges and you just bought the required loft from whichever manufacturer took your fancy. Now they have different grinds, different bounces, different spin characteristics etc. Still, that's what demo days are for. :)

So, just to play devil's advocate...does anyone actually check your wedge grooves (or iron grooves) before playing? Who would know that you had sharpened your wedge grooves, apart from yourself?!

What wedges do you have. If they are pre 2010/11 I might keep them as they could be better than anything new because of the groove rules.

No idea if groove sharpeners work though. One of the very low handicappers at our place says he attacks his with a sharpener before every comp.

bit like a conforming/non conforming high COR driver no one would ever really know other than yourself.

The sort of person that would knowingly use non conforming clubs is the same sort of person that would use a leather wedge in the rough

In my view he is a cheat then. Can't see how he isn't.
