Me and my son played a round today at our local course (both member's) when we arrived we were told to start on the 3rd as there were a few 4 balls who had just set off. So we did. Hit out tee shots on a 100yrd par 3, walked to the green and seen a 2 ball in a buggy just arriving at the tee. We putted out and moved to the 4th, another par3. There were 2 groups in front so we had to wait for the green to clear. As the course is short and most greens can be driven ,we had to wait for them to clear before teeing off. Once we hit the 14th the course gets longer, so we waited and let the buggies through. We apologized and explained we had to wait for greens to clear, they said it's fine and thanked us for letting them through.

My son and I played holes 1&2 then got a drink from the pro shop and played 14-18 only to walk off the course to the club Secretary, standing arms folded as there had been a complaint about slow play.

Those guys had been polite to us and the moaned when we were not there. Why do people do this. Sorry for the long rant but very annoyed. We even explained we had been told to start on 3 but he would not listen. These old fellas were not members but do use the course on a regular basis.

Were we wrong to not let them through? I had even hit a ball into the group in front, by mistake on a tee shot so they parked the buggy where we could see it all the time. We played the gimmie from 2/3ft so didn't putt out all the time.

I'm just annoyed we took the blame. Course was gedney hill, short but risk and reward course.

If you are getting the blame for slow play I would have a word with the secretary. If he still disagreed with you I would take my business elsewhere. Plenty more courses out that way. If you can reach the players in front you can't hit the ball. It's as simple as that!

I was playing a few weeks ago and one of our 4 ball who is a idiot nobody in the club can stand kept saying to me all the time how far do you think you can hit the ball to me. By the 7th i blasted a ball very far over the heads of the 4 ball infront. They were not happy at all. By the 13 he still kept on at me so i tee off again and another monster drive over the 4 ball and one was a committee member. I had a right telling off and rightly so. Never listen to other people on the course as when the s@@t his the fan they walk away

Well this was my thought, I am polite and respect the course and other golfers. My job means I must be. When the club Secretary spoke to me and my son the 2 grounds men laughed and said let me guess the guys in the buggies. Don't worry about them he said. But as everyone knows you donot want to be bad mouthed to anyone.

Email has been sent to the club, I play scratch golf for the club and only play slow when I must. As stated I don't want to hit anyone (if I can help it) ;-)

The first priority has to be the safety of the guys around you. I'd say to the secretary that they were talking nonsense and you won't be lectured on the subject and that's that!

Here here. Also playing through should only be permitted IMO if there is nothing ahead of you and the group behind are playing quicker than yourself. Letting the group behind through would benefit no one if they are only going to get stuck behind the group infront of you and your son.

You hitting over the heads of the group in front was not the fault of the idiot you were playing with. Totally your responsibility.

Would you have jumped off a cliff if someone suggested it?

Is this serious?

You hit over the heads of a 4 ball? TWICE???

You shouldn't really step foot on a golf course if your willing to do things like that

Hmmmm...... Your fault it hit the fan not the guy you were playing with! If he told you to run toward on coming traffic would you do it? No as you'd be concerned for your own safety, so maybe you should have thought about the safety of those you were hitting at before you let your ego tell you to take the shot!... Actually no wait there is no maybe at all, in fact you should NOT have played the shots..

I had an instance myself this week on or 14th hole where the group infront were on the green and 2 guys I was playing with were telling me to get on with it and hit my tee shot. I simply said no I'll wait as I don't want to risk hitting anyone, one guy said yeah as if you can reach the green! What he hadn't taken into account was the heat and downwind but Anyway I ignored him ad waited, I tee'd off pitched the ball front edge and finished just through the back. I'm not long hitter and for me that one was out the screws and longer than I usually hit, but considering the conditions it just wasn't worth risking the health of others for the sake of it.

I think markgs is a wum after his comments on this and it wasn't the van drivers fault he ran over a set of clubs it was the person who left them on the floor by the car!

Markgs -might be worth reading this a couple of times & stop trying to show off to your playing partners & putting other people in danger

Once I was talked into hitting a tee shot before I was happy to by one of my playing partners laughing, saying "you won't hit the green from there!"
I did, with the captain on it at the time, and when we walked up to the green I went to the next tee to apologise to him. Fortunately he laughed it off, fined me a pound for the charity and congratulated me on a great shot.
I have never and will never play a shot with a group potentially within the distance of the club I'm hitting. Mind you I should have known better as it was coming from a guy who won't take friendly advice from an 18 handicapper and his idea of practice is a few pints!

Unbelievable.
He twice goaded you into dangerous play so you responded by "blasting" "monster" balls over the heads of players in front yet he's the idiot.
I think you've judged him harshly.

I doubt "he told me to do it" would stand up in court!

That is how it should be dealt with from both sides!! well done on making the extra effort to walk over and apologise, and fair play to the captain for realising you did not intentionally do it and having a common sense approach. thumbs up all round!
