I got involved in a bit of a fun putting game last night and I was lucky enough to win one of the two games, even though it was played against the assistant pro and two of the scratch team players.

One thing that I noticed was that all of the long putts I actually made were with a TM Penta ball. It got to the stage that I was almost waiting for that ball to get to me so I could have a better chance of holing the putt.

Anyone play the Penta? are they good for more than just putting and are they worth the big money?

I tried one last weekend and quite liked it. It felt more lively off the driver and softer off the putter. Couldn't tell much difference to a ProV with mid and short irons.

I have another 2 to lose yet so I'll wait until I've played a bit more with it until I decide if I'll carry on with them after these have gone.

One thing that I've wondered about with golf balls, and it might apply even more with a 5 layer ball...

Different layers are supposed to react in different ways, and each layer further inwards requires more clubhead speed to compress it.

Just as an example, say the inner layer is for the driver (high launch low spin) and the 4th layer is for short irons (low launch high spin).

If a pro swings his driver at 110mph and a 9 iron at 80mph, what happens if an amateur buys the ball and swings his driver at 80mph :D :D

Then he'll get a drive that comes off the face lower and accentuates any back and side spin imparted at impact. If he normally hits a reasonable height push draw that comes back to the fairway I'd expect them to get a push hook that balloons also.

As far as the Penta goes I felt no discernable difference between the TP Black and the Penta bar it hurt more when I parted with cash. I'll be sticking to my TP Reds for summer and Burner TPs for winter personally.

Try the TPs before you settle on the Pentas.

not back to back tested against the TM TP burners and TP red/black, but a few weeks back i played tilgate forest. I was playing with a ProV1 and although stopping was acheivable from day 40yars it wasnt easy, i found myself playing for the fringe if the pin was at the front as the Pv1 would stuill run a bit.

While looking for a mates ball i found a penta, and on the approach to one of the greens on the backnine i hit in from about 40 yards from an elivated position and the PV1 still run through quite alot, i thought it was me hitting a bad shot (too thin) so dropped the next ball in my pocket to repeat the shot, the penta stopped within a foot of landing, both shots played the same.

Like gasman if money was no object, id definately play penta's as a summer ball, the top rate on greens was mega!

I now use Penta balls and will continue to whenever I can afford them. I previously used TP Red but I find the Penta marginally better all round, the main difference being that they don't cut up too badly. I've never finished a round with the ball looking so new.

Ive been using the TM TP Burner for about a month now ,around the green you cant fault it,maybe its me but the bridgestone rx is an awesome ball as well, its all on pricing realley

Tried the Penta and wwasn't overly impressed. It didn't perform too differently from the Pro V or Z Star but since then I've been put onto the Bridgestone RXS and use that in competitive rounds now. More responsive on the green than the other balls mentioned and a great feeling off the putter without scuffing too much

:D I found two in my collection of found balls when they got sorted out yesterday, I never even realised I had them, so now I can do my own test without the pain of buying a sleeve.

For me as well as on the green they would also have to beat the Z-StarX off the driver to be worth the extra dosh.

Although even if Penta's do that, as soon as I see Z-Star X version in tour Yellow over here in the UK then all bets are off, that neon ball will be my gamer for sure as I just see the colour so much better.

they feel beautiful off the putter. played with one yesterday in mixed foursome, pleased with them, especially as this was first game in 5 weeks due to operation. will keep using them for a while, but i like brigestones as well. :D

Hmm, only played 10 holes with the Penta but damn it is an impressive ball for me. It came off the driver hot, great trajectory and really long, but more impressive it stayed online even into the wind which is quite key for me.

Iron shots felt fine and wedges stopped quickly. For putting it feels just fantastic and just seams to roll really well off my putter, (Odyssey two ball).

I'm not specifically a TM fan boy, but this is the first ball I found that I think actually suit my game enough to justify buying a top price ball.

Unfortunately there is a downside that will stop me using them, in 10 holes both balls lost bits of their covers and no I did not hit any trees :p Maybe I could use them just in comps, but I am starting to subscribe to the theory that you should play one ball type for all your golf, so you get used to how it reacts. Because of that I just can't justify the cost £35 a dozen if I'm losing some and damaging some each time I play, it would become silly expensive.
