I bought a custom set of M2 irons from American golf in August 16 – In November the 8 iron head flew off and was repaired by my local pro shop. Two weeks ago the PW head flew off so I took into AG for them to send back to TM.
I want TM to replace the set under warranty, however between AG and TM they seem quite reluctant to do this. I’m aware of my rights with AG as the seller, am I being unreasonable in wanting them to replace the set? I’ve spoken to two local pro shops who both said they would be pushing to have the set replaced.
I’ve spent c£500 on a set of irons and 1/3 of them are faulty..

i had an identical situation with titlest and they would only repair them. over 6 months every club went. i banged my drum as loud as i could and they didn't give a toss. i even asked them after the 3rd club head come off if i could send the whole set back for re setting. they told me NO!!! they'd fix them as they broke.

hence the reason why nothing in my bag has had a titlest logo for 5 years. not even a fj glove

In 30 years of playing golf I've never had a head fly off (save when the shaft snapped close to the head). How do you clean them? Do you soak them in hot water? Adhesives now a days are so good this should never happen.

Can I ask why you let your local pro repair the first club instead of returning it to AG? I would always give the seller the first chance to put things right. Now as far as they are concerned, only one club has been faulty.

I clean them in cold tap water gently with a toothbrush, they are stored in cool / ambient conditions etc etc. Regarding the first club, it happened down the driving range and I was playing 2 days later - I assumed it was a one off and they re-glued it for free. When the PW head came off I thought there may be a more general issue with the adhesive. My PW has now been with TM for nearly 2 weeks now.

I've only been playing 4 years and have had no issues up to now with club heads

I had an issue with Direct Golf ruining my brand new clubs when adjusting them and TM were very quick to get it resolved - it wasnt their fault, it was DG's, but they insisted it was rectified by sending a new set to me, adjusted and fit by TM before they sent them.

I would hazard a guess it is American golf being reluctant to resolve your issue - TM dealt with my issue exceptionally. I would suggest trying to contact TM and make them aware of what is going on in case AG are not being 100% honest about the situation.

I guess it’s easy for any retailer to want to share the burden of responsibility with the manufacture but as you say TM don’t really matter in this (unless they are prepared to look at your case out with your contract with the retailer)
Even your two local pro-shops are unlikely to have said to you “regardless of TM we would have replaced the whole set for you” so their support for your situation counts for naught too

You must be near to having them 6 months now so press it with the retailer but as mentioned earlier, to them it’s just a loose head on one wedge so you can see why they’re reluctant to swap out a whole set

Hope you get it back soon

Had issues before with clubs before and never had a problem with the manufacturer sorting it out. First time was a TM supersteel driver with steel shaft. Twice I managed to snap the shaft in it, I spoke with TM direct and they ended up replacing it with a graphite shafted version free of charge. Second time was a Titleist 975 JVS HiCOR. Was on the range and I managed to crack the face on it, so I went back to Nevada Bobs and they changed it for a new one. 2 weeks later the same happened so I contacted Titleist direct and they said that they had the same problem with some of the tour pros hitting it too hard and the face was cracking. So they sent me a replacement, but time they sent me the tour issue version that had a slightly different face on and a dozen Pro V1s for my trouble.

My advice is to contact TM yourself and speak to them and explain what has happened, keep it nice and friendly and big them up a bit and they will sort it for you. I can't believe for one minute that they do not want you as a happy customer, because bad publicity especially in the day of the internet is not good.

I spoke to TM directly and they were in line with AG - ie they would just fix the problem clubs. I'm due to call them later so will see how I get on

How did you get on. As a last resort, after exhausting all avenues with AG as that's where the contract lies, I'd resort to social media. I've done it before for other things (not golf) and it does get results but I don't like having to resort to it as I feel there is usually a happy medium to be found somewhere

if you dont get them replaced go straight to twitter.. they have an imagine to maintain they will soon replace them

if emailing always go for the managing directors email.. crap rolls down..

had a problem with sky once.. wanted £250 for a new box.. emailed the managing director.. within 20 mins had a 1tb box (the new thing at the time) offered to me for £50 or the standard box for free

Well, I have to say AG have gone some way to redeeming themselves. Spoke with the store manager today, they are now pushing TM to replace the heads on the set (to the new M2 head). Just need to take them in for them to send off and he is going to give me a 2nd hand set of irons to use in the mean time, so hopefully I'll get new M2 heads on all of the clubs - hopefully :-)

I don’t think AG have much in the way of redemption to do, the head came off a wedge, they didn’t decline to sort it but you wanted a new set (they only have your comment that it’s the 2nd club its happened to because you took that one elsewhere)

Although the retailer did what I suspected they might and passed part of their responsibility for a resolution to TM so its implied it’ll be TM that needs to give the go-ahead (but I’m sure if AG footed the bill TM would do anything asked of them, the retailer is just trying to get it for free to his costs)

So a + & - for them

Agreed I should have taken the 8 iron in to AG when it happened, my local pro shop just offered to fix it for free and it was convenient. What AG and TM agree on between them is immaterial, the service back to me is all I really care about.

Cant argue with that, I got confused when you said you wanted TM to replace the set

If i bought a pair of shoes and one of them was faulty I'd want both shoes to be replaced? I bought them as a set so they should be replaced / fixed as a set. I'm more than happy with replacement heads

New heads are not required though, they just need to be checked and the heads Re-set with epoxy. There is nothing physically wrong with the clubs. Really do not see why you would want a new set, perhaps it's just the throwaway society we live in nowadays.

Why would you buy m2 anyway, they are like a set of tennis rackets, huge heads, very ugly, strong lofts, not much control to be had with them either

I love them, I've never had so much control. Without getting too political on this I think the trouble with modern society is large corporate organisations getting away with ripping people off because people just give up and lie down when there's an issue.

It’s an interesting point and companies shouldn't get away with ripping anyone off.... but with so many of us dependent of large corporate organisations for our purchases I don’t really want the cost of products to creep up & up because everyone’s using social media etc not just on legitimate claims but also just to get what they want rather that what their entitled to under their contracts/agreements

Those costs incurred by companies will be passed onto consumers in much the same way that losses through shoplifting have always been added to the shelf price

Unchecked it will become the norm to push or intimidate companies into providing solutions in excess of contracts and that stuff isn’t free

Hypothetically if AG had just replaced your irons they have a 2nd hand set of M2’s (custom fit for you) and they’re out of pocket not only for the cost price of a brand new set but also lost the mark-up they would’ve made when they sold them. They are not going to take that financial hit themselves

Honestly, I’m not having a go or anything, I do find it genuinely interesting that as more folks adopt this it does a couple of things
Firstly the genuine mistakes made by companies become lost in the mire and don’t get the attention they deserve & secondly a new for old culture gets more common in order to fix any issue regardless of scale and the ticket prices increases because companies know they have to exchange x amount so the initial retail/cost price rises
