Morning all.

I see that AG are selling boxes of 12 Titleist X-Outs for £6.99. Are they worth a punt at that price, purely for use in the winter? What qualities define a ball as being an X-Out? Are they egg-shaped???? :D

Cheers.

They could have more than one external coat on, they could weight more than usual, they might have the wrong brand model on, they might be misshapen and so on.

Each manufacture has to submit a new design to the R&A & USPGA for approval that it meets the required standard, if it doesn't its illegal in Pro & top amateur comps as per the ruling. You can use them but I am not sure if they are game changing but if you want to use them in local comps your rules sec will have to ok it first.

Thanks Parmo.

I'd simply intend to use them in bounce games in the current frosty and windy winter conditions. If they are potentially in any way oddly shaped and will only exaggerate my mild fade/wild slice, then I may not bother.

Thanks again.

They are great for this weather. Who knows whats up with them because they perform like any other ball ive used. For the price you can not go wrong.

HTL - out of interest, what balls did you use to play as you mention that you now play with X-Outs and Warbird? I take it something more expensive? How do they compare to whatever you were using before, would you recommend these particular ones in the 'cheaper' price level?

Thanks

"X-Out golf balls are also conforming products. However, they usually have a cosmetic blemish and/or occasionally have a minor physical defect that should not significantly affect its performance. More often than not, the physical condition causing the ball to be stamped as an X-Out is so minute that it is not recognizable by the player."

Taken from Titleist's website

I bought a dozen last week and used them in the frosty conditions last Saturday. They were OK & it certainly made spotting the ball easier from a distance (& I didn't lose 1 in the 9 holes I played)

I use to play with Wilson Staff DX2, Px3, Titleist NXT, etc have a look in my sig. These balls are defo worth the money if you dont lose 3 a round. Some rounds I was loosing about £12 worth of balls!

The feel so much better of the face and are so nice to use on and around the green.

Going to stick with my budget balls until the weather gets a bit better and then consider spending some money.

Just to mention I bought 50 Titleist NTX & NXT Tours for £19 on EBay, lakeballs but great for a beginner and practice.

Can you notice the difference between the ebay balls and new ones? I only ask, because I get most of my balls from ebay, I only buy pearl grade, and I can't notice any difference at all, but I'm only a 16 H'capper.

Great, I'll check them out as I tend to lose quite a few as well and I'm very reluctant to spend more than £10-12 on a dozen until I get better - maybe the spring/summer, as you mentioned, when there'll be more benefit to using better balls.

No difference at all. I play sometimes play AD333 and bought 40 grade A/B's from EBay for practice and if an where in top condiction I would have used, but they where all worn, not wrecked though but good enough for practice. The Titleist are grade A and though obviously from the US lakes (as all the logos are from the states) look in pretty good shape and I am thinking of using them rather than put them in the shag bag.

Lake balls. No. Defo no. I suppose for this time of year it probably doesn't matter, but they will always be more inconsistent, ball to ball due to the variable time spent immersed in the wet stuff.

x outs are probably a better bet, but I am not sure I could take the ribbing, if I pulled one out on the first tee.

I use those in the winter, its well worth it as comps are not on and it saves some cash to spend on new clubs in the summer ;)

tbh though I generally am against lake balls in play there has never been tests proving it affects the use of the ball just rough made up stats, usual from ball makers themselves.

It would be interesting for GM or another mag to test them and see the difference, mind you with advertising and the likes.

I think x outs are a much better choice rather than lake balls. Sooner or later you will pull one out that plays like a brick or goes as far as a soggy blancmange off the club.

X outs generally only have a slight paint defect or occasionally printing flaws and will play as per a new ball straight from the box.
