Today I went to see my coaching pro and approved Titleist fitting pro!

As everyone on the forum knows, i believe custom fitting is yet not essential to play good golf, but is essential to make the most of your golf!
When I got my clubs fitted back in 2004 I filled a form in online and printed the results off, Found the cheapest deal and said i want these clubs with this spec. hey presto i was DIY custom fitted.......

3 and 1/2 years later My wedge fitting session commences

the lie board comes out the lie tape goes on a new vokey lob wedge!
three strikes to four targets shows all my shots coming out of the heel!
Same again with a sand and gap wedge!

My pro said i need to order wedges with a 3 or four degree flatter lie, then we can work from there!
funnily enough when i filled in the DIY fitting form
the results were that i needed 3 degrees upright clubs.
So for the last 3 years ive been consequently playing with clubs 6-7 degrees wrong lie angle. this has related new evidence into the way which my body has made adjustments to hit the ball . to make clean contact on the ball with these clubs i have to cut across the ball to make up for the lie. this has made it increasingly difficult to hit that favoured 'draw' shot. Now that me and my pro have discovered this not only am i down for a new set of wedges but im going to purchase a new set of irons too when money situations allow me. I can get my clubs adjusted but i am down to get a new set any way!
as the lie angle has contributed to my swing dynamics we now have to make adjustments to my swing as well.
My Pro said ive done well to play as good as i have with the clubs i got.
Just another lesson on how important club fitting is and to get fitted properly by an experienced pro. Don't trust a form because its not enough data for accurate results.

Good luck!

Ching ching! New wedges and new irons? I bet all the pros wish there were more folks like you around!!

How much draw so you expect to get out of a pitching wedge? Be lucky if you could get a yard there's so much loft on them.

I hope you see a significant scoring improvement with all this 'essential' fitting you're buying into.

You cannot buy your way to a better golf game!

Like i said I could get my clubs adjusted but im down to get a new set anyway so ching ching that. Yes indeed it will make significant difference as my club doesnt lie flat at impact im hitting across the ball rather than flush. Believe it or not a better contact at impact will in turn produce more better
ball striking, consistency, flexibility, control, the list goes on!
OBVIOUSLY i dont expect to see big difference in hitting a draw with a wedge so that was a silly remark. This applies to my irons.
indeed i hope to see an improvement in my score as well. So i will keep updated through out the year how proper custom fitting has improved my game.

by the way my custom fit session was free!
And i will be paying a competitive price for my 3 new properly custom fit wedges!

I dont see why birdieman is so scared of custom fitting he seems to stress himself out about it. I dare him to get get custom fitted I double dare!!!!like i said every tour player is custom fitted otherwise .. oh ive said it before!!!

Sorry MVP, couldn't resist.
I'm not averse to fitting, just a bit sceptical.
Out of interest what height are you? If you're clubs are flat lies I'd expect you to be shortish.

Had a look online at the Orka fitting page and Cobra fitting page as well as Ping one a while ago and I come out standard on all of them.

I'm content with that, reagrding improving I have many things to work on but I don't feel fitting is one of them.

Other forum members are strangely quiet on this topic, come on you lot let us know what you think!

I think custom fitting is a good thing, however, if you have a decent swing, are an average height and make good contact with the ball there aint much point.

When I got my last set of irons (Di7) I had a bloke watch me hit some balls for 10-15 mins from sw-4 iron and I was fine I could have had video analysis etc done but what’s the point.

In my eyes custom fitting is often making up for mistakes in peoples swing, unless they are of a non average build.

Sorry if I have upset anybody but that’s what this forum is for!

Im 6ft 3. that is why ping suggest the upright cos its done on height and wrist to floor. but i have been fitted and i need flat. The ping fitting doesnt allow for how far apart your shoulders are which makes a huge difference. If your shoulders are 2 metres(over the top i know) apart it will be a different fit from 2foot apart!at address your hands will be higher if your shoulders are wider etc....
when i struck the board my shots were from the heel of the club not from the toe so i need to have a flatter lie angle.
ahh the appliance of science!

What was the difference medwayjon? what did you have changed? did your distance, accuracy improve?

Im at my parents in law, come on folks lets get an argument or something going!

I got custom fitted for my Ping I5 irons and also my Ping Rapture driver.

I strongly believe that custom fitting is a great experiance and that it will ultimately improve your game.

I play off of 4 and when I was custom fitted for my driver I was 12 degrees of loft!!!! I couldnt believe it but I carried the 12 degree driver a full 11 yards further than the 9.5! All about launch angles etc. Custom fitting is not just interesting its also great fun!

TRY IT!

If you are spending a lot of money on clubs I personally think you are mad if you don't get them custom fitted.
Is there any point in taking them off the shelf if for £50 more you can ensure clubs are made to measure?
I was custom fitted by Ping for my new driver, previously I was using a R540 with 9.5 deg loft and regular shaft, but they recommended switching to 9 deg with Grafalloy Stiff shaft.
I am hitting more consistent drives and am around 20 yards longer since being fitted.
When I change the irons next I will definetly get fitted and would recommend everyone to do the same.
Rant over.

I got the on-line custom fitting for a driver. Pretty much standard but with a lady's flex shaft. I don't get any more distance but the club is very comfortable to use and this helps with consistency.
My best improvement has come from using a heavy training club, so it seems to me we should improve our swing before investing in new gear.

I didn't pay for my custom fitting. It was FOC with the purchase of clubs although if I had wanted to be fitted and then go elsewhere to buy it would have been £30.

A lot of people only get fitted for irons, I think you should be fitted for all clubs in the bag.

Like the change of signature by the way. As I have said, I am very pro fitting, there will always be those who are sceptical of it, I have to say dont knock it until you have tried it.

I agree with the notion that there is a major psychological factor involved with custome fitting. I always felt much better mentally with my custom weighted and length pool cue in my hand. Not only does the golfers game benefit from fitting I believe it also has a hugely positive effect on mental strength.

The Ping Custom Fitting chart is actually a nonsense pile of £$%^ It is designed so amateurs can buy stuff online or go in a proshop and tell them the spec so ping reps dont have to do much work and it saves PING money!

This is exactly what i fell for in 2004 when i bought my clubs! Its not what height you are or how long your wrist to the floor is. its where your club face is at impact which determines the lie side of custom fitting. Shaft flex also affects the lie angle but only slightly. My pro has an intersting device whic is basically a 2 iron with a wedge head squared above it. He showed me that if the lie is too upright at imapct the clubface points left of the target! with the 2 iron its only slightly but with the wedge its way off to the left. It does reallly show the importance of it!
