Off to St Ives, well Brampton park golf club (titleists fitting centre near their factory) to be custom fitted for a shiny new set of ZBs on the 15th August.

Unfortunately, because I am being done at 12, I won't get my new sticks till the middle of the next week, which is a shame. If I had the earlier appointment I would get them on the day, and get a tour of their factory.

I do get to play Brampton Park golf course though, for a £15 green fee (members guest rate), so I shall treat my Dad to a round in the afternoon after the fitting.

After this I will no longer be able to blame my sticks for any of my failings.

Actually, I am in a bit of a dilemma as to when to start playing with them. We have a few medals left this year, and half of me says I would be better off playing these with my old sticks (and all games in between), as I know how they all perform, and change to the new ones next spring in Florida when I have 2 weeks constant sunny golf to get used to them.
But the other half of me says the new ones are shiny, and need to be used straight away before the newness wears off.

I also need to play ok at Cobtree with the boys from the forum.

Hmmm

Are you seriously suggesting that you have the self control to have a brand new shiny set of Titleists and not play with them for 6 months???
You're a better man than I am Gunga Din! I wouldn't last six hours.

You do have to bear in mind that I am still in the middle of a fairly passionate affair with my Macgregor 1025m blades. They may be a bit beaten up, and the shine not so bright, but they are still a fine set of irons.

Not really too sure why I am changing them, except some tarty desire to have a one make bag, which is a bit sad really.

Brampton is just up the road from me, though I've never played it. I believe you can only get on the course as a guest of a member.

Definitely wrong approach to the clubs, murph. They will have been fitted to you so will obviously be better. they just have to be played.

Brampton is supposed to be very nice, I will report back.

As I am having a fitting session, I am temporarily a members guest (even though I know no one there). It is £20 for the session, whether I buy any thing or not, so if I take my Dad, even if I didn't buy anything (difficult I know), then £15 each, plus £20 means we could play a private course for £50. Not too bad me thinks. I guess if I did it too often, they may suss it out, but for a one off game, fair enough.

I know the clubs will be fitted for me, but I bet they come up standard length S300s with standard lie too. I have always played standard clubs, and I bet my swing adapted to these years ago. The wear patch in my 6 iron (the bat I practice with most) is plumb in the middle of the face, so I can't believe there can be too much wrong.

In which case it won't matter if I change or not. But if they come out at plus 1/2" on standard 2° upright (I am 6ft 2), it will take a bit of getting used to in terms of swing, and also distance control, in which case even if they are 'right', I am not sure medalling straight away is a good idea.

Few sessions on the range to get used to the feel and learn your new yardages you'll be fine.

Why buy new sticks and keep em wrapped up? Golf is for playing! Whats the worst thats gonna happen you dont play so well and then what? Sponsors pull out, loose ya tour card?

Go have fun then give us the full report. make us all jelous!

I'd be using them straight away - even if you keep the old ones for medals, but that would mean your practice games would be with different tools so prob not a good idea.

Hope your fitting is better than mine... I went to a pro when I was in Australia and although he was very good at helping - I wasn't good at playing!

Something about hitting the ball off the plastic board. I did nothing but top & shank - probably 20 balls in a row. We eventually left the ball out of the equation, and just made practice swings off the board. Found I was marking in the centre of the sole of the club, so all good on lie angle. Then for striking the ball, just hit off turf and I was fine again.

Ended up being your average joe; standard lie & length with reg flex tri-spec steel shafts.

Best of luck with it, and enjoy the fitting session!

I am off 12. Have been for 15 years. Have played Cally big bertha game improvement irons, Cleveland TA5 cavity backs and Macgregor 1025m blades in this time. What sort of bats I play with has no bearing on my handicap at all. My ball striking is clearly so bad it doesn't make any difference.

I've been custom fitted for a few sets of irons and every time I am given 2 degrees upright.

The outcome? I end up hooking the ball.

I now use standard lie and am much more comfortable.
