Today I went to American Golf to try out a number of different sets of irons. Trying numerous makes my favourite in order were

1. Titlelist CB 714
2. Mizuno MP54
3. Ping I25

Currently I play with an old set of Maxfli Revolution's and I think there is no surprise on my top two choices as when comparing they actually looked fairly similar. The head size was nice and small.

I actually went to try the Mizuno EZ but i could just not get on with them. I really liked the MP54's and then the shop assistant brought out the CB 714s. I had not even originally considered these but on hitting the 7 iron the ball had a great flight and went at least 10 yards further than my current irons. Before anyone mentions it I have checked the loft and the are exactly the same so they are not jacked like some irons

I was wondering if anyone else has any opinions/reviews on these?

I must also say I was very impressed with american golf. There was no pushy sell at all, they let me try a number of different clubs. I went away at the end and said i will have a good think about it which they were fine with. We did the custom fitting and being 6ft i was incredibly standard. The Swing speed indicated i need a stiff shaft (I averaged 86 mph with a 6 iron) Loft potentially could be 1 degree upright but i think i will get standard for now

I currently play off 12 but as previously mentioned i am in the middle of a series of lessons and i do feel my level of play is improving so I don't get the impression these will be too hard to use. I was hitting the ball well at the range tonight so i guess the test will be on the days when you aren't striking it well

Once again i appreciate everyone's opinions and feedback

thanks
Mike

I've tried all 3 clubs and have to agree with you, such a nice feel off the face and very forgiving for the kinda club they are.

The only club out there that can compare from what I've tried are the Ping S55's, another great club, which I would highly recommend

Can you get your hands on some of the longer irons to try?
I can hit pretty much any 7 iron no probs. the longer irons, not so much. Worth trying before you sink 600 notes into them, if you get on with them then happy days. The mp54 will be significantly more forgiving in the 4 and 5 I'd wager.

I'm a big Titleist fan and the CB's would be my choice.

However, I've tried the other 2, and others, and I find the Mizuno's too similar to the 53's which I had a set and didn't like- hated the slot at the back which attracted mud and grass. The i25 on the other hand is ridiculously easy to hit especially down at 3 and 4 iron and are very forgiving and sound like a forged iron, my only slight gripe with them is the offset at lower numbers, it was far to much for my eye with the i20's but its slightly less with the i25's.

If I played 3 times a week it would be CB's, as its once a week I would choose i25's to ensure I kept the enjoyment and forgiveness required for occasional golf.

Get to a place you can try other clubs over just a 7 iron, I judge a set by the 3 iron and 8 iron first but that's just me.

I have the 712 CB's. Love the short and mid irons but I have a love hate relationship with the 4 iron, and to a certain extent the 5 iron. Currently, we're in the love phase, and they're absolutely flying.

I've hit the Pings, inc the 4 iron - Gobsmacked how easy the long irons were to hit. I'm fighting the urge but no doubt will weaken.

I would look at the TM TP's and maybe the Ping S55's too but if you are hitting the CB's well then why not. It s all about what works for your game and if you are comfy with the lower level of forgiveness these may give you over other models, especially if the swing changes will improve your striking then go for it. Nothing better than new shinies in the bag

was in AG today and tried the i25's again, man the Ping CFC shaft really is a pile of poo. They dont have a DGS300 to fit so had to walk away- must cost them a lot of potential sales
