Here goes folks - my first post and I thought I'd take the opportunity to dive straight in and review the Titleist 909 D2.
If I can start by saying that I need to stand up and confess that I am a Golf Addict. I think I need professional help - I dont have cash coming out my ears, but the most important thing is that my children have clothes and food on the table, but I cant stop buying golf gear. Over the last 10 years I've spent enough for a townhouse in Spain and a car more capable than I already own.
My drivers over the last 3-4 years have been Titleist 983k,983e,905T,905S,905R,907D2, Callaway FT3, Taylor Made 320,340,360, Burner TP etc. You get the picture, I keep confusing the thought that I can actually buy the ability to get the ball in the fairway when in reality the money would be better spent going and getting a lesson from a decent pro.
Yet again I went to the local golf shop and walked in with the view that I wasnt going to get suckered into buying yet another Titleist driver which was virtually the same as all the other Titleist drivers that I had ever bought. Yet again I saw the gleaming bit of black metal and yet again I thought - she's the dog for me.
Today was the first outing with the new 909D2 with Aldila Voodoo Stiff shaft. Hating myself that I'd actually parted with the cash for yet another Titleist driver, I have to say that this is the first one that I have been genuinely impressed with. In the past I've found Titleist drivers not as long as Taylor Made driver's, not as forgiving as Callaway but I really believe that at last they've stepped up to the plate and delivered a great driver with a good stock shaft - which is always a bone of contention for lower handicap golfers.
To start with the Aldila Voodoo as this is really the engine that drives the whole thing. Firstly I was impressed at how stable the shaft felt without at the same time feeling as if I was swinging an iron bar. Secondly the dark burgundy colour with the spiralling graphics around it looked sensational also.
I went for an 8.5 degree Driver as I am sick of turing into the wind and losing distance as I watch the ball climb into the air. The 909D2 bores fantastically well into the wind and the face has an unusally soft feel - which I suppose is some sort of legal trampoline effect working on the face. I'm not going to say I hit the ball 20-30 yards further but the feel and accuracy was highly impressive with good distance being achieved also.
I didnt want to like this driver just so that I could have a go at myself for being so weak as to buying yet another Titleist driver, but currently I am in the honeymoon period and I think this driver may be staying in the bag for a long time. I think Titleist have a winner on their hands.
