Hi all,

Anyone used or owned a set of the above?

Going to see a set tomorrow and these could be the first proper iron set I've owned considering I've played with old, cheap irons for the last few years . I love the forged look and attracted by the brand name. I'm concerned about the how much 12 yo clubs will offer in comparison to a more modern set in terms of forgiveness. They are also a reg shaft and I should be a stiff so how much difference will that make? I'm a circa 15 handicapper who's ball striking is rapidly improving.

They are available for well under £100 so do you think these could be good move to improve my game?

Never owned or used the clubs but you will be missing forgiveness compared to the newer irons but center strikes should perform well.

If you should be stiff I would wait for stiff irons as they will be much harder to control with reg shafts in them.

I know a Pro who was not ashamed to use these quite dated, but still seriously 'game improvement' clubs for quite a while - even after becoming qualified!

Perhaps now a little behind some of the 'modern' GI weapons, but still pretty nice to play. They are forged, so you also get a bit more feedback - which may or may not be a good thing!

Shafts might be an issue, not so much the flex but the weight! Assuming they are steel, then the original Nippons are pretty light, which may mean you tend to spray the ball - certainly did when I used light shafts!

The only way to find out is to try them and see how they work for you!

If you do get them, then (because they are forged) I'd recommend that you get the lofts checked/adjusted to factory setting and the lie set to your needs. That's quite a simple process, costing a couple of quid per club.

Interested in this point. Do the lofts and lies fall out slightly due to softer heads?

Yep, the forged heads move a lot easier. Depending on use, they can move out by 2/3 degrees over a season. Using them on range mats can cause quite a big change
