Coming to a landmark birthday, am thinking of getting some new custom fitted shineys. My current set of TM Burner 2.0 are really good. I bought them off the shelf and have never looked at checking loft, lie etc. Initially i was thinking of getting a custom fit when i break 85. I have got below 90 couple of times, but since Nov have been consistently 95-100 (as most of the greens are spongy). So am thinking of taking a plunge. My top 3 choices are
1) Titelist AP1
2) TaylorMade speedos (or whatever they are called now)
3) Nike's new VRS Covert 2.0 Irons

The reasons are more emotional rather than rational and look at others that can help with my handicap instead.

1) Titelist AP1 - have always eyed these but was never sure I was 'upto it'. Good reputation for doing a fit.
2) TaylorMade speedos - Always been a TM fanboi and the Burners are as forgiving as it gets. So assuming new sticks would be the same. Wentworth fitting is not very far either.
3) Nike - Been watching Nike's progress for a while. Switched to Nike Covert Driver and driving has taken off. The new sticks are apparetly very good too. The downside is that they dont seem to have many fitting centres around.

Is the line of thinking correct or should I be more rational in my choices. I am looking to do 5-PW and maybe a 3W, so would a budget of 400 quid work?

I like the new Nike stuff, got talking to one of the staff at American Golf Camberley and they were telling me how far Nike have come along, and having had a hit on the Nike Coverts last year I can agree.

Out of interest, where you going to buy from Hoebridge? Only I was there Saturday at the range, and noted that the 'old' Covert 3 woods for a reduced price of £129, where AG have them for £99. Just a heads up!

While I love the club and support it. I am not sure we are the most cost competitive. Anyways, this time round, I am hoping for a proper fit at a fitting centre rather than go via a shop

£400 for 5 to PW will be cutting it close and that's assuming you go for stock shaft and grips. Find a fitter that has a good working relationship with one or two of the manufacturers, may one you hadn't thought of trying, as they may be able to change you shafts if required, without any up sell.

I got my Mizuno JPX 825 Pros with Nippon shaft for no extra charge as the shop I got them from and Mizuno have a very good working relationship, I did pay extra to get the grips changed to midsize, but my 4 to 9 set was just a smidge over £500 including a very comprehensive fitting.

You swing style will pretty much dictate the type of club you should go for, a steep angle of attack then look for something with a wide slow and a bit of forgiving bounce as that will help the club from digging in to much should you hit the ground before the ball. A narrow sole or blade like club with a steep angle of attack will dig in and make fatted shots really bad.

Ping G25 have to be on the list to try out surely!? You can get 5-PW for sub £400 easily.

I've hit AP1s as they are a nice powerful feeling club. No idea about the speedblades mind.

What about 712 AP 1's? can you still get them? if so they should be a bit cheaper than 714's.

Hes on about going for a Custom Fit though and may struggle getting fit at some places for Last Seasons clubs
Often new range, means new fitting carts, with new/diff shafts........

If was happy to buy off the shelf then the 712 would be a 'no brainer' at reduced prices now
