I have a first round match in a 2-ball handicap cup tomorrow night, looking for some tips with how to go about it? This will be my first time playing in a 2-ball competition.

I have a handicap of 8 and my partner is off of 20. He is a reasonably solid player, with a decent short game.

Any tips on how to go about the match?

Not sure I understand the question. Do you mean a better ball format where the best score counts on each hole? Or is it combined totals for both cards? Could be several variations on format.

Anything can happen, so don’t give up on a hole, or the match for that matter, even if you think you’re out of it.

Sorry, it will be in foursomes format. As in alternate drives then alternate shots with the same ball from there.

best tip I can give (apart from dont do it, waste of 18 holes imo) is to score less than your opponents, win a hole first then dont lose any holes.

Do that and I guarantee you will win

Best form of golf there is for finding out your weaknes'

Foursomes is a difficult format because you hit so few shots it's hard to get into a rthymm. I once played a match where I had only 2 putts on the front 9!!

Look at the scorecard carefully and plan who will be better on the par 3's and on the stronger driving holes. Also look at things like where is majority of trouble (left or right) and consider whether you and your partner hit fades or draws etc so you can work out a strategy.

I enjoy scratch foursomes, it's a different challenge from other formats but not everyones cup of tea.

I hate foresomes with a passion but as far as I can see there is no way you can have a strategy as you have no idea how each of you is going to play. I guess you could do things like try to layup to your PPs favourite yardage but all you can really do is try to hit your shots as well as you can and hope for the best. Oh, and agree with your PP that you will not apologise for bad shots.

The first thing I would say is dont say sorry, as I guarantee your partner will make just as many mistakes as you will. Then try and work out who prefers driving at what holes, my course is pretty easy to work out as my partner plays the even holes as he plays the par 3s better and these are all on the even side.

Scratch foursomes is the purest form of golf IMVHO.

OP.
Let your partner choose the holes he wants to play [odds or evens].
If you are having a bad day stay positive and never ever give up.

You may not have a putt for two or three holes. If that is the case have a wee practice putt once the hole is finished.

Cheers for all the responses guys, I'm not really sure I like the thought of depending on someone else either. I guess I will find out tonight!
